On the sixth afternoon, Adam closed the shop early and set the little watch on a square of green felt between them.
"Ready," he said.
Veronika leaned close. He wound the crown, once, twice, three times, with a gentle thumb. For a heartbeat nothing happened. Then, faint and clear, came a tick, then another, a tiny steady pulse in the quiet.
She put a hand over her mouth. "It's alive."
"It was always alive. It only needed someone to listen."
Behind them the clocks began to chime the hour, one after another in a long cascade, bright and silvery and very slightly out of tune. She found tears on her face and wiped them, laughing.
"Thank you. Truly."
"It was a pleasure." He took off his loupe and set it down, and for the first time looked at her without it, eyes warm and brown. "Veronika. Can I ask you something?"
"Yes."
"Your flight is tomorrow."
"At noon."
"I do not want to be a man who lets it go as it is."
Her breath caught. "Then don't."
"May I kiss you?" said Adam. "In the shop, in front of every clock I have ever mended?"
"Yes," said Veronika. "And if I say stop, you must wind every one of them, by hand, before I leave."
"There are four hundred."
"Then I'll have to stay."
He leaned in and kissed her, tenderly, one inked hand rising to her cheek. It was slow and warm, tasting of tea and peppermint, the whole shop ticking around them like a hundred small hearts.
When they parted, both of them were smiling.
"Green?" he asked.
"Green," said Veronika. "Very green."
She changed her flight. Then she changed it again. Her grandfather's watch still keeps perfect time, a little behind, a little in love.
