Continuity, Seoul – Part 1: The Scar

Every morning for six weeks, Min-jun painted the same scar on the same actor's face. This morning, the actor in his chair already had one. A real one. On the wrong side.

At five in the morning, the film set in north Seoul was still dark. Trucks idled. Crew members carried coffee in both hands. The neon of the city glowed pink and blue through the mist.

Park Min-jun had his kit laid out like a surgeon's tools. Brushes. Sponges. Tiny pots of colour. He had dyed his hair lavender for the season and wore a single pearl earring that caught the light when he leaned close to his work.

He was the best continuity makeup artist in Korean drama. He could look at a photo from three months ago and match every freckle.

The lead actor, Kang Tae-ho, sat down in his chair as he did every morning. Sunglasses. Hood up. He did not speak much before coffee.

Min-jun reached for the scar kit. The character had a thin scar through the left eyebrow. He had painted it forty times.

Then he looked at the actor's face properly.

There was already a scar. Old, faded, real. Through the right eyebrow.

Kang Tae-ho had never had a scar.

"Is everything okay?" the actor asked. His voice was close, but slightly too low.

"Perfect," Min-jun said, smiling, and began to paint.

His hands were steady. His mind was racing.

At lunch, he found the assistant director, Seo Ji-woo, eating rice from a container while shouting into her radio.

"I need to show you something," he said quietly. He held up his phone with two photos side by side. Kang Tae-ho last month. Kang Tae-ho this morning.

Ji-woo looked. And looked again.

"The ears," she said slowly. "His ears are different."

"That isn't Tae-ho," Min-jun whispered.

Next: Part 2, The Double. A trailer full of photographs, a director with a dripping umbrella, and a key card from a hotel outside the city.
