Gentle Hands – Part 1

The letter was inside a cookbook.

Sophie only found it because she was making Marcus’s grandmother’s lemon cake for his birthday, and the recipe was on page 112, and the envelope was tucked between pages 112 and 113 as if he had wanted it to be found and been too afraid to hand it over.

It said Sophie on the front, in his small, neat handwriting.

It was dated fourteen months ago.

She sat down on the kitchen floor of their little house in Fitzroy and read it with flour on her fingers.

Soph,

I’ve tried to say this out loud about twenty times. I can’t, so I’m writing it.

I love you. I love our life. Nothing is wrong. But there’s something about me I’ve never told you, because I was afraid you’d think less of me.

I like it when you take charge. When you tell me what to do. When you decide. Not just in the kitchen or on holiday. In everything. In bed. I think about it more than I should.

If this is too strange, burn this letter and we’ll never talk about it. I’ll still be the luckiest man in Melbourne.

M.

Sophie read it three times. The oven timer went off. She didn’t hear it.

She didn’t burn it.

She put it on the kitchen table that night, next to his plate, while he was in the shower. Then she sat down across from it and waited.

Marcus came in, towelling his hair, humming. He saw the envelope. He stopped humming. All the colour left his face.

“Soph,” he said. “I can explain.”

“You already did.” She tapped the envelope. “Fourteen months ago.”

“I didn’t think you’d,” he stopped. He sat down very slowly, as if his legs had stopped working. “Are you upset?”

Sophie looked at him. At her gentle, funny, slightly clumsy husband, who brought her coffee every morning, who cried at dog videos, who had been carrying this alone for more than a year.

“I’m upset,” she said, “that you were scared of me.”

His eyes filled.

“Marcus,” she said softly. “Look at me.”

He looked.

“I don’t think less of you,” she said. “I think I want to understand. Will you tell me? Properly? All of it?”

They talked until two in the morning.

He told her things he’d never said to anyone. She asked questions, and some of them made him blush so deeply she started laughing, and then he started laughing, and by midnight they were both lying on the living room rug, holding hands, staring at the ceiling.

“I don’t know how to be strict,” Sophie admitted. “I’m a primary school librarian. I tell children to use their indoor voices.”

“I don’t need strict,” Marcus said. “I need you. Just deciding. Being sure.” He turned his head on the rug. “You’re already sure about everything. You just don’t say it.”

Sophie thought about that.

It was true. She knew which restaurant he’d like before he did. She knew when he was getting sick a day before the fever. She knew when he needed to stop working and rest. She had just never said any of it out loud as an instruction.

“Okay,” she said slowly. “Let’s try something.”

She sat up. He sat up too.

“No,” she said gently. “Stay there.”

He lay back down. His breathing changed.

“Close your eyes,” Sophie said.

He did.

She looked at him for a long moment, her husband of seven years, lying on the rug with his eyes closed, waiting for her. She felt something new rise in her chest. Not power, exactly. Something warmer. Tenderness, with a spine in it.

“If I do anything you don’t like,” she said, “you say lemon. Like the cake. And I stop. Promise?”

“I promise.”

“Good.” She leaned down until her mouth was close to his ear. “Now. You’re going to lie very still. And you’re not going to move until I tell you to.”

What followed belonged only to them: to the soft lamplight on the old rug and the new, quiet certainty in her voice, to the slow, gentle way she discovered what it felt like to be completely trusted. She was not strict. She didn’t need to be. She was simply sure, and he melted under it like butter in a warm kitchen.

In the morning, she brought him coffee in bed.

It was the first time in seven years. He always brought hers.

“You don’t have to do that,” he said, sitting up, confused.

“I know.” She handed it to him. “But I decided to.”

He held the cup in both hands and looked at her over the top of it, and his eyes were shining.

“How was it?” Sophie asked. “Honestly. For you.”

“Honestly?” He put the cup down. “It was the best night of our marriage.”

“Mine too,” she said, and was surprised by how much she meant it.

He reached for her hand. “Can we,”

“Yes,” Sophie said. “But on my schedule.” She took the empty cup from him. “Saturday. Seven o’clock. Wear the blue shirt.”

Marcus stared at her. Then he started grinning like a schoolboy.

“Yes, Soph.”

“And Marcus?”

“Yes?”

She kissed his forehead.

“Next time you’re scared to tell me something,” she said, “don’t put it in a cookbook. Put it in my hand.”

She made the lemon cake that afternoon. She wrote on it, in yellow icing, in her neatest librarian handwriting: Happy birthday. Saturday, 7 p.m. Blue shirt.

He kept a photo of that cake on his phone for years.

Next: Part 2, Saturday, 7 p.m. Sophie has a plan, a blue shirt, and a very unexpected knock at the door.
