Her Rules, His Choice – Part 1

Alexandra Cole had a rule about Sunday mornings: no phones until ten.

It was the only rule she had ever made for herself. Every other rule in her life was for someone else. Four hundred employees. A board of directors. A man named Ethan Park, who was at that moment standing in her kitchen in an apron, making croissants from scratch, because she had told him to on Friday.

She sat at the marble counter with her coffee and watched him fold the butter into the dough.

“You’re very quiet,” she said.

“You told me to concentrate.”

“I did.” She smiled into her cup. “Good.”

He glanced up at her, and something in his face made her put the coffee down.

“Ethan. What is it?”

He wiped his hands on the apron. He looked, suddenly, like a man about to jump off a high diving board.

“I want to ask you for something,” he said. “And I want you to say no if it’s too much.”

It had started a year ago, with a joke.

He had cooked for her on their third date and burned the sauce, and she had said, without thinking, Do it again. Properly this time. And he had looked at her with an expression she had never seen on a man’s face before. Not hurt. Not annoyed.

Relieved.

They had talked for a long time that night. About what he wanted. About what she liked. About how in her office, she made a thousand decisions a day, and how, to her surprise, she didn’t get tired of it with him. With him it felt different. Lighter. Like a gift he was handing her, not a weight.

So they made rules. Small ones. He would cook dinner on weekdays. She chose their weekend plans. He would tell her the truth about everything, always. She decided when the night was over.

He loved it. She could see he loved it. He was calmer than when they met, happier, less anxious.

But this morning, in her kitchen, he wanted more.

“Everything,” Ethan said. “I mean, not everything. But I want it to be your house. Your rules. Full time. Not just weekends.” He took a breath. “A female-led relationship. Properly.”

Alexandra was quiet for a long moment.

“Why?” she asked.

“Because I’m happiest when I know what you want.” He looked at his hands, covered in flour. “I spend all day in a kitchen making decisions. What to bake, what to throw away, who to shout at. When I come home, I don’t want to decide anything. I want to make you happy. That’s all.”

“That’s a lot of power to give someone.”

“I know who I’m giving it to.”

She stood up. She walked around the counter slowly and stopped in front of him. He was taller than her, but right now, in the apron, with flour on his cheek, he seemed to be looking up.

“If I say yes,” she said, “it won’t be a game. I don’t do anything halfway. You know that.”

“I know.”

“There will be rules about your money. Your time. Your clothes. Who you see.” She held his eyes. “And you’ll still have the right to say no. Always. To any of it. If you ever stop saying no to me when you mean it, I end it. That’s my rule. The only one you can’t cross out.”

Ethan’s throat moved. “Yes, Alexandra.”

“Not yet,” she said. “Finish the croissants. I’ll write it down.”

She wrote it the way she wrote every important document. Three drafts. Clear language. No ambiguity.

She read it to him that evening, sitting on the sofa, while he sat on the floor at her feet with his head against her knee.

He will check with her before making plans on weekends.

She manages the joint account. He keeps his own, private, always.

He will tell her if he is unhappy, within one day.

Every Sunday at ten, they review the rules. Either may change any of them.

She will never use a rule to punish him for being honest.

His safe word is croissant.

He laughed at that one, and she tugged his hair gently, and he stopped laughing.

“Questions?” she asked.

“Just one.” He turned to look up at her. “Why the review every Sunday?”

Alexandra put down the paper.

“Because power without review is how people get hurt,” she said. “I don’t run my company that way. I won’t run us that way.”

He looked at her for a long time. Then he took her hand and kissed the inside of her wrist, slowly.

“Yes, Alexandra,” he said. “To all of it.”

What happened next belonged only to them: to the city lights through the tall windows and the soft command in her voice, to the deep, quiet trust of a man who had given her everything and a woman who intended to deserve it. She was in charge. He was exactly where he wanted to be.

The first Sunday review was at ten o’clock sharp.

They sat at the marble counter with coffee and the document between them, and Alexandra uncapped a pen.

“Anything to change?” she asked.

Ethan thought about it.

“Yes,” he said. “Rule eight.”

She frowned. “There is no rule eight.”

“I know.” He slid a small piece of paper across the counter. It said, in his messy handwriting: Every Sunday he makes croissants. She is not allowed to help.

Alexandra laughed, a real laugh, the kind that her employees had never heard.

“Approved,” she said, and signed it.

Next: Part 2, The Board Meeting. Alexandra’s company is under attack, and Ethan has a decision of his own to bring her.
