The studio on Bedford Avenue smelled of green soap and ink. The walls were covered in flash sheets and photographs of old work, and the radio in the corner played slow jazz at a volume that only the owner could tolerate. Kiara had been tattooing there for four years, and she had learned that most clients talked to fill the silence, and the quiet ones were the ones worth listening to.

Elias Reyes was the quietest client she had ever had.

He arrived on a Tuesday in October, in a dark jacket and a plain shirt, and sat in the chair with his sleeve already rolled to the elbow. There was a long, pale scar along the inside of his left forearm, neat and old.

"I want it covered," he said. "Something that looks like it belongs there."

"Tell me what you'd like," said Kiara.

"I don't know yet."

"Then let's find out together," said Kiara. "Tell me the story, and I'll draw it."

He looked at her for a long moment. Something moved in his face, tired and careful.

"It's not a good story," he said.

"Most of the good ones aren't."

He almost smiled. "I was twenty. I was building a model bridge for an engineering project, and my father told me it wasn't strong enough. I tried to prove him wrong with a utility knife and a bad night. I didn't cut deep. But the scar stayed."

Kiara set down her pencil. Her own hands were steady, but her chest had tightened.

"Thank you for telling me," she said quietly.

"You're not going to ask why I tried?"

"You already told me. You were angry, and you were scared, and you were twenty." She picked up the pencil again. "I'll draw you something that makes the arm look stronger. Not because it hides anything. Because it's yours."

Elias let out a long breath, the tension leaving his shoulders.

Over the next weeks, he came back every Tuesday. The design evolved slowly: a line of ink like a river, then a series of thin, interlocking arcs, like the ribs of a bridge. Kiara worked in small, careful sessions, talking about the paintings she wanted to make one day, and the gallery she had worked at for a year before the money ran out. Elias talked about the buildings he designed, the rooms that people walked into without ever noticing the beams above them.

"You talk about structures the way I talk about colour," said Kiara one afternoon, wiping the needle clean.

"Which is?"

"Like they matter more than the people in them."

He was quiet. "I used to think that too," he said. "Then someone told me the people are the only reason the building exists."

"Who was that?"

"My sister," said Elias. "She's the one who taught me to draw with my left hand, when I broke my right in school."

Kiara smiled. "Then she's right."

At the end of that session, the arcs were nearly finished, and the scar was almost gone under the lines. Elias looked at it in the mirror, turning his arm slowly.

"It looks strong," he said.

"It looks like you," said Kiara. "Like someone who survived."

He turned to her then, his face open and a little dazed.

"Can I ask you something?" he said.

"Yes."

"Would you have dinner with me, once the piece is finished? Not as the artist. Just as someone who's been listening to me for six weeks and hasn't looked away once."

Kiara's breath caught. "Yes," she said. "But I want to see the rest of the design first, before I agree to anything else."

"Fair," said Elias, and smiled, and for the first time, she saw him laugh.

"Green?" she asked, half teasing.

"Green," said Elias, and held out his arm for the next line, steady and trusting.
