The Last Room on Floor Nine – Part 2: Nothing Is Locked Forever

The rooftop was empty except for the wind and a single waiter polishing glasses at the far end of the bar. Istanbul spread out below them in a sea of lights, the minarets pale against the cloud, the Bosphorus a black ribbon at the edge of the city.

The man in the grey coat was already there, leaning on the balustrade with his back to her.

"You came," Kerem said, without turning. "I thought you might be sensible."

"I'm not sensible," said Defne. "I'm curious. Explain the photographs."

He turned then. He looked tired, with a short beard and a face that might have been handsome once in a way that had nothing to do with charm. He held out a thin folder.

"My father managed this hotel before you did," he said. "Ten years ago, a guest died in room 912. Officially, it was a heart attack. Unofficially, the guest was a journalist looking into payments the hotel made to a city councillor. The night manager on duty that week was a woman named Aylin."

Defne opened the folder. Inside was a faded report, a blurred photo of a young woman in a green cardigan, and a handwritten note.

"Aylin," she said quietly.

"She was your predecessor. Nobody told you that, did they?"

"No."

"She was framed. She tried to tell the truth, and she was fired for it. My father signed the papers. I have spent three years trying to find where she went." He took a breath. "The photographs in the room were hers. She must have pinned them there before she left, to remind herself of the night. I found them in a box at my aunt's house last month."

Defne's throat was tight. "Why did you wait until now to come to me?"

"Because I wasn't sure you were honest," Kerem said. "Your name is on the rota for every night the councillor visited. I thought you might be part of it."

"And now?"

"Now I think you found the key before I did," he said, and his voice softened. "And I'd rather trust someone who was looking for the truth than someone who was hiding it."

She looked at the folder again, then up at him. The wind lifted a strand of her hair across her face. He reached out, slowly, and tucked it back behind her ear, the way someone does when they have decided it is safe to touch.

"Can I?" he asked.

"Yes," said Defne, and then, quickly: "But only if you tell me the rest."

"There isn't much more. Only this." He handed her a small brass bell, the same one from the photograph, tarnished and cold. "Your bell. It was the signal Aylin used to call for help when someone in the hotel was threatening her. It was never rung. The night she left, she put it in the safe, and it's been there ever since."

Defne held the bell in her palm. Its weight was familiar, though she had never held this one before.

"Then we ring it," she said, "and see who comes."

Kerem smiled, a slow, grateful smile. "Good. I was hoping you'd say that."

She rang it once. The sound was clear and sharp across the empty roof.

Below, in the lobby, a light came on in the office behind the night desk. Then another. Then the revolving door began to turn, and a figure stepped through, looking up at the rooftop as if they had been waiting for exactly this moment.

Defne's heart thudded. Kerem took her hand, and this time she didn't let go.
