Lessons in Kneeling – Part 1

The cello started every evening at nine o’clock, through the ceiling of Lukas Brandt’s flat in Kreuzberg.
It was always the same piece. Slow. Deep. A single line of music that rose and fell like breathing, and stopped, and started again from the beginning whenever the player made a mistake.
Lukas hated it for the first month. He was an engineer. He liked things that worked the first time. He sat at his laptop with headphones on, writing code, answering emails, checking his phone every four minutes, and the cello kept starting over, and over, and over.
In the second month, he started waiting for it.
In the third month, he went upstairs and knocked.
The woman who opened the door was tall, with silver-blond hair cut short and sharp, and grey eyes that took him in from his shoes to his face in about one second.
“You’re the downstairs neighbour,” she said in German. “You’re going to complain.”
“No. I.” Lukas stopped. He didn’t actually know why he was there. “The piece. What is it?”
She raised one eyebrow.
“Bach,” she said. “Cello Suite number five. Sarabande.” She studied him. “You’ve been listening.”
“Every night.”
“And?”
“And you keep starting again,” he said. “Every time you get one note wrong. Why don’t you just keep going?”
She looked at him for a long moment. Then she stepped back and opened the door wider.
“Come in,” she said. “I’ll show you.”
Her name was Ingrid. She had played with the Berlin Philharmonic for eleven years and now taught at the conservatory. Her flat was almost empty: a wooden floor, a chair, a music stand, the cello, and a wall of windows looking out over the rooftops and the TV tower.
She sat in the chair. She pointed at the floor in front of her.
“Sit,” she said.
He sat cross-legged on the bare floorboards, feeling ridiculous.
“No,” Ingrid said. “Kneel. Back straight. Hands on your thighs.”
He looked up at her. She looked back, calm and patient and completely certain.
He knelt.
“Now,” she said, lifting the bow, “you don’t move. You don’t talk. You don’t check your phone. You just listen. Until I say stop.”
“How long?”
“Until I say stop,” she repeated. And began to play.
It was the longest twenty minutes of his life.
His knees hurt. His back ached. His phone buzzed in his pocket four times and every cell in his body screamed to check it. His mind ran through emails, deadlines, a bug in the code, what to have for dinner, whether he’d locked his door.
And then, somewhere around minute fifteen, it all went quiet.
He didn’t notice it happen. He just realised, suddenly, that he was only listening. To the cello. To the long, slow notes rising and falling. To the rain that had started on the windows. To his own breathing, slowing down to match the music.
When she stopped, he didn’t move.
Ingrid lowered the bow. She looked at him for a long time.
“Good,” she said softly.
One word. It went through him like warm water.
“Same time tomorrow,” she said. “Nine o’clock. If you want.”
He came back every night for six weeks.
She taught him to kneel without fidgeting. To wait without asking. To keep his eyes down until she told him to look up. To breathe. She never raised her voice. She never needed to. If he moved, she simply stopped playing, and waited, and started the piece again from the beginning.
“That’s why,” she told him one night. “That’s why I start again. Not because I’m angry. Because I want it to be right.”
He started sleeping better. His colleagues noticed he’d stopped checking his phone in meetings. He found himself, for the first time in years, sitting in a café without doing anything at all, just watching the rain.
In the sixth week, he looked up without permission.
Ingrid stopped playing.
“Lukas,” she said. “Eyes down.”
“I want to ask you something.”
She waited. The silence stretched out, and he knew she was teaching him again, even now. He looked down. He waited. A full minute. Two.
“Ask,” she said finally.
“What is this?” he said quietly. “What are we doing?”
Ingrid put the cello down, carefully, on its side on the floor. She stood up and walked to where he was kneeling. She put one hand under his chin and lifted his face so he was looking at her.
“I am teaching you to give up control,” she said. “Because you’ve never had a single moment of peace in your life. And you are learning very well.” Her thumb moved slowly along his jaw. “The question is whether you want to learn the rest.”
“The rest?”
“With me.” Her grey eyes were steady. “Not only with music. With everything. My rules. My pace. And a word that stops all of it, which you choose, and which I will always respect.”
He didn’t hesitate.
“Sarabande,” he said.
A slow smile spread across her face.
“A good word,” she said. “Stand up.”
He stood. She took his hand and led him away from the music stand, toward the door at the far end of the empty room. What followed belonged only to them: to the rain on the tall windows and the TV tower glowing in the dark, to the patient, exacting way she taught him that surrender is not weakness but the hardest kind of strength. She did not hurry. She had never hurried anything in her life.
Later, lying in the dark with his head on her shoulder, he listened to her heartbeat. Slow. Steady. Like the music.
“Ingrid,” he said. “Why me?”
“Because you came upstairs,” she said simply. “Most people complain about the noise. You asked what the music was.”
The next evening, at nine o’clock, the cello started through the ceiling of the empty flat downstairs.
Lukas wasn’t there to hear it. He was upstairs, kneeling, his eyes down, his back straight, perfectly still.
She played the Sarabande all the way through without a single mistake.
Next: Part 2, The Concert. Ingrid’s comeback night, and the moment Lukas finally learns what she needs.
