The Night Nurse – Part 1: Her Ward

“You don’t run onto my ward,” said Astrid Berg. “Ever.”

Henrik Lund was still breathing hard. Thirty seconds earlier, he had burst through the doors of the intensive care unit at a full sprint, pushing a trolley, shouting orders, with a patient from a motorway crash who was now, thanks partly to him, stable in bed four.

“He was crashing,” Henrik said. “I didn’t have time to walk.”

“You had time to shout at my nurses.” Astrid didn’t raise her voice. She never did. She was tall and pale-blonde, with her hair in a tight knot and a navy charge nurse’s uniform without a single crease. “You had time to knock over a medication cart. You had time to touch a central line without gloves.”

Henrik opened his mouth.

“My ward,” said Astrid. “My rules. Next time, you walk. You hand over to me. And you wait.”

She turned and walked away before he could answer.

The other nurses stared at him with an expression that said, very clearly, we warned you.

It wasn’t the first time. It was the eleventh.

Henrik had been bringing patients to the night shift at Rikshospitalet for two years, and in two years he had argued with every charge nurse in the building. He was very good at his job. Everyone agreed on that. He was fast and brave and he had saved more lives on the side of a frozen road than most doctors saved in a career.

He was also, as one senior consultant had put it, a golden retriever who had escaped its lead.

Astrid was the only one who never shouted back.

And for some reason he couldn’t explain, that made it worse.

At four in the morning, he found her in the staff room.

It was empty. Grey light was beginning to show at the window over the car park. She was sitting at the table with a cup of black coffee, filling in paperwork, and she didn’t look up when he came in.

“I came to apologise,” Henrik said.

“Did you.”

“The central line. You were right. I wasn’t thinking.”

She put her pen down and finally looked at him. Her eyes were very pale grey, like the sky outside.

“You never think,” she said. “You act. It’s why you’re brilliant on the road, and why you’re a disaster in my unit.” She tilted her head. “Why do you think that is?”

Nobody had ever asked him that.

He sat down across from her. He thought about it, really thought, for the first time.

“Because on the road, I’m in charge,” he said slowly. “Nobody else is there. Every decision is mine. And when I get here,” he stopped.

“And when you get here?”

“I don’t know how to stop,” Henrik said quietly. “I don’t know how to hand it over. Even when I want to.”

Astrid looked at him for a long time.

“Do you want to?” she asked.

The question sat between them on the staff room table like something alive.

“I think,” Henrik said carefully, “I’ve wanted someone to take it off me for years. I just never met anyone strong enough.”

He expected her to laugh. Or tell him to leave. Instead, Astrid picked up her coffee, took a slow sip, and set it down again.

“I’m going to say something,” she said, “and you’re going to listen until I finish. That’s rule one.”

He went very still.

“What happens on my ward is professional. That never changes. You walk, you hand over, you wait. Like everyone else.” She held his gaze. “But I’m off shift on Saturday. If you want to find out what it feels like to hand it over, completely, to someone who knows what she’s doing, you can come to my flat at eight. And you can say no at any point. You choose a word. When you say it, everything stops. No questions.”

Henrik’s heart was going so fast he could hear it.

“What word?” he asked.

“Yours,” said Astrid. “Choose carefully. I take it very seriously.”

He thought for a moment.

“Tourniquet,” he said.

For the first time since he had known her, the corner of Astrid Berg’s mouth moved.

“Good,” she said. “It stops the bleeding. Saturday. Eight. Don’t run up the stairs.”

Next: Part 2, Saturday at Eight. A flat in Grünerløkka, a list of rules, and the first time Henrik ever waits.
