The Queen of Spades – Part 1

“One hand,” Jake Morrison said. “Heads up. You and me.”

Valentina Cruz didn’t look up from the deck she was shuffling. It was 4 a.m. in the back room of the Bellamy Casino, the high-stakes table was empty, and the only other person in the room was a security guard pretending not to listen.

“Dealers don’t play,” she said.

“You’re off shift in five minutes.”

“And then I go home.”

“What if I make it interesting?”

She finally looked up. Jake was leaning on the green felt in a rumpled black shirt, sunglasses pushed up on his head, a stack of chips in front of him he’d won over six hours. He was very good at poker. He was also, everyone on the Strip agreed, unbearable.

“Interesting how?” Valentina asked.

He grinned. “If I win, you have dinner with me.”

“And if I win?”

“If you win,” Jake said, spreading his hands, “I’ll do whatever you say. For a week.”

The security guard coughed loudly.

Valentina put the deck down on the felt. She looked at Jake for a long moment with dark, unreadable eyes.

“Anything I say?”

“Within reason.”

“Define reason.”

“I don’t know.” He laughed. “Nothing illegal. Nothing that would make my mother cry.”

“And you can stop any time,” Valentina said. It wasn’t a question.

Jake blinked. He hadn’t expected that. “Sure. I guess.”

“Not you guess. You can stop any time. You say fold, and the bet is off. No penalty.” She held his eyes. “Agreed?”

Something in her voice made him stop grinning.

“Agreed,” he said.

Valentina took off her name badge and sat down across from him.

She dealt with one hand.

Jake had a pair of kings. He bet everything. He was so sure he didn’t even look at her face.

Valentina turned over the queen of spades and the ace of spades. Then the river came. Another spade.

Flush.

The security guard made a sound like a man trying very hard not to laugh.

Jake stared at the cards for a long time. Then he looked up at her, and for the first time since she’d known him, he didn’t have anything to say.

Valentina stood up. She pinned her name badge back on.

“Tomorrow,” she said. “Eight a.m. Coffee, black, two sugars, at my apartment. The address is on the back of this.” She flicked a casino business card across the felt. “Don’t be late.”

He was four minutes early.

She opened the door in a silk robe with her hair wrapped in a towel, took the coffee, tasted it, and nodded.

“Good,” she said. “Now take your shoes off. You’re cleaning my kitchen.”

Jake looked past her at the kitchen. It was spotless.

“It’s already clean.”

“Then it’ll be fast,” Valentina said. “Off.”

He took his shoes off.

The week was not what he had expected.

He had expected humiliation. Revenge, maybe, for every time he’d been rude to a dealer at her table. Instead, Valentina sent him to the farmers’ market on Tuesday with a list in Spanish and no translation. She made him call his mother on Wednesday, the mother he hadn’t spoken to in two years, and sat beside him on the sofa while he did it, her hand on his knee, steady, while his voice cracked.

On Thursday she made him sleep. Eight hours. Phone in her drawer. He hadn’t slept eight hours in five years.

On Friday he woke up and realised he hadn’t played poker in six days. And he didn’t miss it.

“Why?” he asked her that evening.

They were on her balcony, high above the Strip. The lights of Las Vegas glittered below them like a spilled jewellery box. Valentina was in a deep chair with a glass of wine. He was sitting on the floor at her feet, where she’d told him to sit, his head resting against her knee. He had stopped noticing it was strange somewhere around Wednesday.

“Why what?”

“Why the market. My mother. Sleep.” He turned his head to look up at her. “You could have made me do anything.”

Valentina looked down at him. Her fingers moved slowly through his hair.

“I’ve dealt cards to you for two years, Jake,” she said. “You’re the best player in the city. And the most miserable man I’ve ever met.” She shrugged. “I won a week. I wanted to see what you looked like when you stopped fighting everything.”

He didn’t say anything for a long time.

“And?” he asked eventually. “What do I look like?”

She leaned down and kissed him. Slowly. Like she had all the time in the world, and he was the one who had to wait.

“Like this,” she said against his mouth.

On the seventh night, she told him to stand up.

He stood. She stood too, close, and put one finger under his chin, tilting his face down toward hers.

“The bet ends at midnight,” she said. “You’ve never said fold.”

“I didn’t want to.”

“I know.” She smiled. “So now I’m going to ask you something, and you’re going to answer as yourself. Not as a man who lost a bet.”

“Okay.”

“Do you want this to end at midnight?”

Jake looked at her. At the queen of spades, in a black silk dress, on a balcony above the city where he had spent five years winning everything and feeling nothing.

“No,” he said.

Valentina’s smile deepened.

“Then the stakes change,” she said. “No more bets. Rules. Mine. Written down. And you can still fold any time you want.”

“Yes,” Jake said. Then, more quietly: “Yes, Valentina.”

She took his hand and led him inside. What followed belonged only to them: to the city lights through the glass and the slow, delicious command in her voice, to a gambler who had finally found something worth losing to. She played him like the best hand she’d ever been dealt.

He didn’t fold once.
