The Sculptor's Studio – Part 2: The Shape Inside

The block stood in the far corner of the studio, under a sheet of grey canvas. Marco pulled the cloth away slowly, the way someone might lift a blanket from a sleeping child.

The figure inside was a woman, half emerging from the stone. Her head was bent, her hair swept back, and one hand was raised to her ear, as though she were listening to something very far away. The face was not finished. It was almost there, the features only suggested, the eyes still closed.

Sofia stood very still.

"It's a woman listening," she said at last.

"It's a woman listening for the answer," said Marco quietly. "I've been carving her for two years. Every time I touch the stone, I'm asking her what she wants to hear. And she's never answered."

The evening light came through the high windows, turning the marble warm and gold. Sofia stepped closer, and saw the tiny chisel marks along the curve of the jaw, the faint lines where he had stopped and started again a dozen times.

"Why did you stop?" she asked.

"Because I was afraid of finishing it," said Marco, very quietly. "Once it's done, it isn't mine any more. It belongs to whoever looks at it."

Sofia turned to look at him. He was standing with his hands at his sides, white dust on his shirt, his eyes fixed on the unfinished face.

"Can I ask you something?" she said.

"Yes."

"Have you been listening, while you carve? Really listening?"

Marco swallowed. "I've been listening to the silence," he said. "It's the only thing in this studio that hasn't ever asked me for anything. Until you came."

Sofia's throat tightened. She stepped closer, until she could see the shadow in his eyes.

"Then let me help you finish her," she said softly. "Not as your assistant. As someone who's listening too."

"Sofia," said Marco, and his voice cracked.

"Can I ask you something else?" she said.

"Yes."

"Would you let me hold the chisel while you guide my hand? Just once, on her ear, where the sound would come in?"

He stared at her for a long moment. Then he nodded, very slowly.

"Yes," he said. "But first, can I kiss you? Because I think if I don't, I'll never stop listening to the stone long enough to say it."

Sofia laughed, shaky and bright. "Yes," she said. "And if I say stop, you let me finish the ear."

"Deal," said Marco, and reached out, his dusty hand coming up to cradle her cheek, very gently, as though she too were made of marble and might break.

He kissed her slowly, his mouth warm against hers, the scent of stone dust and sunlight between them. Her hands rested on his shoulders, and he drew her closer, careful and sure. The evening bell rang faintly from the village below, and neither of them moved until the light had turned completely to gold.

When they parted, both were breathing unevenly, and their foreheads rested together.

"Green?" he whispered.

"Green," said Sofia. "Very green. Now hand me the chisel, Marco. Let's see if she can finally hear us."

He laughed, a broken, delighted sound, and placed the tool in her palm, his fingers closing over hers as they bent together over the stone.
