Silk and Steel – Part 2: The Workshop

The new agreement was eleven pages long, and Bianca had written every word of it in Italian, then translated it into English herself, then rewritten it twice.
Noah read it in his workshop in Bristol, sitting on an upturned crate surrounded by sawdust and half-finished cabinets, while rain drummed on the corrugated roof.
He will spend one week in every four in Milan.
She chooses his clothes when he is in Milan. He chooses nothing.
He keeps his workshop. She will never ask him to give it up.
His word is steel. It stops everything, everywhere, always.
She will visit Bristol once. To understand.
He read the last line three times. Bianca Ferraro didn’t visit places. Places visited her.
He picked up his phone.
You want to come here? he texted.
Her reply came in thirty seconds.
Friday. Send a car. Not a nice one. I want to see the real thing.
He picked her up from Bristol Airport himself, in his rusty white van with N. Bennett, Joinery painted on the side.
She came through arrivals in a long black coat and very expensive boots, looked at the van, looked at him in his work jeans and old jumper, and raised one eyebrow.
“This is the car?”
“You said not a nice one.”
“I meant a taxi.” She climbed in anyway, and sat in the passenger seat with her handbag on her knees, and for the entire forty-minute drive she said absolutely nothing. He drove with his heart in his throat.
At the workshop, she stood in the doorway for a long time.
It was a converted railway arch, brick and timber, lit by hanging bulbs. Wood everywhere: oak, walnut, ash, stacked in racks. Tools on the walls, each one in its outlined place. A long workbench scarred by twenty years of work. And in the middle of the floor, under a dust sheet, something big.
“Show me,” Bianca said.
He pulled the dust sheet off.
It was a cutting table. Long and wide, walnut, with a top so smooth it shone like water under the bulbs. The legs were carved with a pattern of fine, interlocking lines, like the weave of fabric. There was a long, shallow drawer for patterns, and a slot along one edge, exactly the right size for her pinking shears.
Bianca walked around it slowly, the way she had walked around him on the first day in Milan.
She ran one fingertip along the edge. She opened the drawer and closed it. She bent down to look at the carved legs, and for a long time she didn’t speak.
“The pattern,” she said finally. “On the legs.”
“The silk lining,” Noah said. “From the suit. The one I closed the show in. I copied the weave.”
She straightened up. Her face was doing something he had never seen it do.
“How long?”
“Four months. Every evening.” He shrugged, suddenly shy. “You said every good suit has a structure inside it that nobody sees. I thought you should have one too.”
Bianca Ferraro, who had never asked anyone to teach her anything in twenty years, took off her long black coat and hung it on a hook by the door.
“Teach me,” she said.
“Teach you what?”
“Something. Anything. With your hands.” She rolled up the sleeves of her silk shirt. “I want to know what you know.”
He stared at her. “You’ll ruin your shirt.”
“Then I’ll make another one,” she said. “Show me.”
So he showed her. How to hold a chisel. How to read the grain of a board. How to plane a piece of oak until the shavings came off in long, curling ribbons, thin as paper. She was terrible at first. She swore in Italian. She cut her thumb, very slightly, and refused a plaster. He stood behind her and put his hands over hers on the plane, the way she had once put her hand on his chest in the studio, and said quietly, “Slower. Breathe. Listen to the wood.”
She stopped.
“You’re telling me what to do,” she said.
“I’m teaching you,” Noah said. “It’s different.”
She was quiet for a moment. Then she nodded, and leaned back very slightly against him, and pushed the plane again. Slowly. A perfect ribbon of oak curled off the blade.
“Good,” he said.
She turned her head and looked at him over her shoulder.
“Careful,” she murmured. “That’s my word.”
By midnight, the workshop smelled of oak and coffee and her perfume.
She had made a small wooden box. It was crooked. One corner didn’t quite meet. She held it up to the light and looked at it as if it were the finest thing she had ever made.
“It’s terrible,” she said.
“It’s brilliant,” said Noah. “For a first one.”
She put the box down on the walnut table. Then she turned to him, and the student was gone, and the designer was back, all at once.
“The lesson is over,” Bianca said. “Now it’s my turn. Lock the door.”
He locked the door.
What happened next belonged only to them: the old brick arch and the rain on the roof and the smell of fresh-cut wood, the low, precise certainty of her voice in a place that had only ever been his. She took apart the evening the way she took apart a garment, piece by piece, exactly. He gave her everything. He always would.
The walnut cutting table was shipped to Milan in December.
It stands in the centre of her studio now. Every new collection is cut on it. When journalists ask about it, Bianca says only that it was made by the best craftsman she has ever met.
The crooked little box sits on the corner of the table, holding her pins.
Noah offered to fix the corner once. She told him no.
“The structure underneath,” she said, “doesn’t have to be perfect. It just has to hold.”
The End.
