The oasis outside Bukhara was a green miracle in the middle of the sand: date palms, pomegranate trees, a stone well that the caravan had been drinking from for a thousand years. They arrived in the late afternoon, dusty and exhausted, and Ahmad declared a day of rest.
Nilufar went down to the pool at the edge of the palms and sat on the warm stones with her feet in the water. Lorenzo found her there an hour later, with two cups of sweet green tea.
"You're going to tell the others who you are," he said, sitting beside her.
"Ahmad already knows," said Nilufar. "He saw my ring at the first well and didn't say a word. He's a better liar than you are."
"I'm an excellent liar."
"You told me your name was Lorenzo Vendramin. Your name is Lorenzo Vendramin."
"That's true," he said, grinning. "That's the best lie of all."
She laughed, and the sound echoed off the palm trunks. He passed her a cup, and their fingers touched, and neither of them moved away.
"Tell me the rest," said Nilufar. "Not the trade. The truth."
Lorenzo was quiet for a moment, looking at the water.
"My family lost a ship to pirates when I was nineteen," he said. "My father borrowed money from the wrong men to replace it. I spent six years paying off debts, travelling every road I could, selling silk and fear and promises. I'm not a good man. But I'm an honest one about the things that matter."
"What matters to you?"
"Keeping my word," said Lorenzo, and looked at her. "And not lying to the one person I'd like to trust."
Nilufar's heart turned over, slowly. She set down her cup.
"Then I'll tell you mine," she said. "My father wanted me married to a Timurid prince I'd never met. I ran because I was afraid of a life where no one asked what I wanted. I didn't expect to find a man who asks everything."
"I'm not that good," said Lorenzo. "I just find it hard to stop asking once I've started."
The palms whispered overhead. Somewhere a bird called, clear and sweet. The light was turning gold across the pool.
"Can I ask you something?" Nilufar said.
"Anything."
"Will you come with me to Samarkand? Not as my guard, or my trader. As a man who doesn't lie to me?"
Lorenzo's face softened, and he set down his own cup.
"Yes," he said. "But only if you let me ask one thing first."
"Ask."
"Can I kiss you, Nilufar? Here, under the palms, before the caravan starts gossiping?"
"Yes," she whispered. "And if I want you to stop, I'll say so, even if I'm laughing."
He leaned towards her, slowly, the way he had moved through the desert all week, careful with every step. When his mouth met hers, it was warm and unhurried, tasting of mint tea and the sweetness of the oasis air. Her hand came up to rest against his chest, and she felt his heartbeat quicken under her palm.
When they parted, the sun was a red coin on the horizon, and both of them were smiling like people who had decided to stop pretending.
"Green?" he asked, low and rough.
"Green," said Nilufar. "Entirely green. Now tell me the second truth, Lorenzo, before the caravan comes looking for us."
"The second truth," said Lorenzo, "is that I've been in love with you since you corrected my Dante."
She laughed, and kissed him again, and the palms rustled gently in the evening wind.
