The Fan Painter of Seville – Part 3: The Feria

It came together fast after that.

For years, Iván Sanz had been quietly replacing museum paintings with near-perfect copies he painted himself, then selling the originals abroad. He had sold Doña Beatriz a "rare original" that was really a copy of a painting still in the museum. The theft the night before had been his first real mistake. He had needed to remove the museum's copy before an outside expert examined it.

He had left Andrés's fan at the scene to send the police after the wrong man. He had taken it from Doña Beatriz's gift box months earlier.

"He'll leave Seville," Lola said. "Tonight. With the painting."

"Not tonight," Andrés said. "Tonight is the Feria."

The April Fair: a week when all of Seville filled a field of striped tents with lanterns, dancing and horses. The roads would be jammed. The trains would be full.

"If he wants to disappear," Andrés said, "he will do it in the crowd."

They searched the fair for two hours: Lola in plain clothes, Andrés in his best embroidered shirt with a carnation behind his ear, scanning thousands of faces under the lanterns.

Then he saw it. A man in a flamenco hat at a tent bar, a long cardboard tube under his arm. He was fanning himself in the heat.

With one of Andrés's fans. A red one, stolen from his studio.

Andrés walked straight up to him, smiling.

"That's a beautiful fan," he said. "May I see the swallows?"

Iván turned, and froze. In the half-second he hesitated, Lola's officers closed in from both sides.

The painting was in the tube, rolled but unharmed.

The Museo de la Luz reopened a month later. Hidden copies were found and removed. Doña Beatriz donated her fake to the museum's new room of forgeries. The museum commissioned a fan from Andrés, painted with swallows, to hang beside the returned painting.

On the night of the reopening, Lola found him in the courtyard, in the scent of orange blossom.

"You know," she said, "I have arrested many people. I have never had a suspect solve the case for me."

"I was never really a suspect," Andrés said. "You would have stopped by now."

She laughed. "Maybe I'm still investigating."

He took a small fan from his pocket, opened it, and handed it to her. Deep blue silk. A single swallow, painted with one perfect stroke.

"Evidence," he said.

She kept it.

Next: The High Voice of Tbilisi, a choir recording, a whisper in the music and a bell that is about to disappear.
