The Lace Map of Bruges – Part 1: The Pattern

Most lace tells a story in flowers and vines. This piece told one in numbers. And Jules Devos was the first person in sixty years who could read them.
Bruges in winter looks like a painting someone forgot to finish. Grey canals. Swans. Brick houses leaning together over the water. The bells of the old belfry counting the hours through the mist.
Jules's workshop was a narrow room above a canal, full of light and silence. He restored antique lace: wedding veils, christening gowns, altar cloths. He worked in a soft grey cardigan with his round glasses low on his nose and his rings set aside in a little dish, because they caught on the threads.
The old woman arrived on a Monday, leaning on a cane.
"My name is Madame Claes," she said. "My mother made this in 1962. It is the last thing she ever made." She paused. "I would like it to be beautiful again before I die."
She unfolded a square of fine bobbin lace, yellowed and torn.
Jules studied it under his lamp for a long time. The pattern was beautiful but strange. The flowers were not arranged like flowers. They were arranged in rows. Some had five petals. Some had six. Some had none.
He had seen patterns like this once before, in a museum, made by lacemakers who had hidden messages for resistance fighters.
It was a code.
That night, he sat up counting petals and turning them into numbers. By midnight he had a list. By one o'clock, he knew what it was.
Coordinates. A street in Antwerp. A building number. And one final word, stitched in the border, in thread so fine he almost missed it.
Kluis.
The Flemish word for vault.
Next: Part 2, The Auditor. A diamond office in Antwerp, a bricked-up basement, and a visitor waiting in a dark workshop.
