The Last Pas de Deux – Part 1: The Rope

Romance & Sensual·EN·1 min read·Published 2026-10-30, updated 2026-10-30·Part 1 of 3

Three weeks before opening night, a sandbag fell from the rigging and missed Theo Lindqvist by one step. Everyone called it an accident. Ida Brandt knew it wasn't.

Copenhagen in November smells of rain and woodsmoke. The canals turn silver, and the Nordlys Theatre glows on the harbour like a lantern.

Inside, Theo was rehearsing alone. No music. Just the slap of his shoes on the boards and the creak of the old stage. He moved the way water moves, nothing wasted.

Ida watched from the wings with her headset around her neck. She had worked with dancers for ten years. She had never seen anyone make stillness look like flight.

Then she heard it. A soft snick above.

"Theo! Left!"

He moved without thinking. The sandbag hit the boards where he had been standing, hard enough to split a plank.

The whole company came running. Henrik Falk, the director, called it old equipment. Jonas Weber, the other principal, said nothing at all.

That night, Ida climbed into the fly gallery with a torch. The rope that held the sandbag hadn't frayed. It had been cut, cleanly, almost all the way through, so the weight would finish the job.

She found Theo in the dressing room, wrapping his ankle, a grey silk scarf at his throat.

"Someone wants you off that stage," she said.

He looked at her in the mirror. "I know," he said quietly. "This is the third time."

He opened a drawer. Inside were two notes, printed, unsigned.

Step aside before opening night.

And the second, newer:

Next time, I won't miss.

Next: Part 2, The Understudy. Who would benefit if the star is hurt, and why the rope was not the only thing that was cut.
