Tiago took him across the Tagus on his day off, in a small motorboat, the city glittering behind them.
On the way, he told him the story. In 1974, his grandfather had been a boat mechanic. One night, a man named Duarte asked him to help hide something in the boathouse: a crate, heavy as stone. Two days later, a ship went down in the river in a storm, and Duarte's brother was on it. Duarte never spoke of the crate again.
"My grandfather always said it wasn't treasure," Tiago said. "He said it was a voice."
The boathouse was falling apart, half sunk into the mud, its doors chained. The iron key turned with a scream of rust.
Inside, under rotting tarpaulins, was the crate. Rafael and Tiago pried it open together.
It was not gold. It was records. Dozens of old vinyl discs in paper sleeves, and a reel-to-reel tape recorder.
Rafael lifted the first record out with trembling hands. The label was handwritten. Duarte, Inês. 1973.
"His sister," Rafael whispered. "Senhor Duarte had a sister who sang."
Rafael knew every great fado singer of the last century. He had never heard of Inês Duarte.
Back at the Blue Door that night, after closing, Dona Lurdes found an old record player. They put on the first disc. Through the crackle came a woman's voice, so beautiful that the three of them sat in silence until the side ended.
It was O Navio Perdido. The original.
And the song was not about a ship at all. It was about a woman who had been silenced.
When Rafael stepped outside at two in the morning, a black car was waiting at the end of the alley. A well-dressed man got out.
"Senhor Costa," said Sr. Almeida, the developer who had been trying to buy the Blue Door for a year. "I hear you found something in my boathouse."
Next: Part 3, The Original. A developer's threat, a file from 1974, and a song sung the way it was meant to be heard.
