The sea was cold and clear in the early morning, and the four of them swam out from the rocks below the villa with their voices carrying across the water. Sophie reached the buoy first and hung on, laughing and gasping, while Tom came up beside her with a shout.
"You're cheating," he said.
"I'm winning," said Sophie. "There's a difference."
Eleni and Jake swam side by side, slower, talking quietly between strokes. When they reached the buoy, they both looked at the others with a mixture of nerves and mischief.
"We should talk before breakfast," said Eleni.
"We should talk before anything," said Tom.
They floated in a loose circle, the sun warm on their faces, the cliffs rising pale behind them.
"Here's what I want to say," Sophie began. "I'm glad we're doing this. But I don't want anyone to feel pressured. Not even a little. If I want to stop, I want to be able to stop without it being a big deal."
"Same," said Tom.
"Same," said Eleni. "And I want to know where everyone's lines are, before we go anywhere near them."
Jake nodded. "Fair. I'll go first. I don't want anything that happens in this group to change how we treat each other on land. Dinner stays dinner. Friendship stays friendship. Nobody gets left out, and nobody keeps secrets."
"No secrets," said Sophie. "That's the rule I can live with."
They talked it through in the water, then on the terrace over coffee and bread, then in the shade of the fig tree in the afternoon. They wrote a list on the back of a postcard: what they were curious about, what they would never do, what each of them needed to hear before they said yes. Tom added a line that said check in again, every time. Eleni wrote always check on the others, not just yourself.
By evening, the postcard was full, creased and salt-stained.
They ate dinner on the terrace again. The sea was dark and calm below the cliffs. The first stars were out, and the air smelled of lemons and thyme.
"Who wants to go first tonight?" asked Jake, grinning.
"I'd like to start with a swim," said Sophie. "Just the two of us. Then we'll see."
Tom raised an eyebrow. "Sophie."
"Yes?"
"Can I come too? Only if you want me to."
"Yes," said Sophie, and smiled at him. "And if I say stop, we all stop, and we make tea."
Eleni laughed softly. "We can all make tea, then."
The swim was quiet and cool, just Sophie and Tom in the dark water, their hands finding each other beneath the surface, the lights of the villa glowing above on the cliff. When they came back to the rocks, wrapped in towels, Eleni and Jake were waiting with fresh bread and an offer of wine.
"Green?" asked Jake, handing Tom a glass.
"Green," said Tom, and looked at Sophie, who nodded.
They sat together on the warm stone, four friends who had known each other for fifteen years, and talked until the moon rose over the sea. Nothing happened that night that any of them had not asked for, and they all went to bed with the same quiet smile, knowing the week had only just begun.
