The Velvet Contract – Part 1

The folder was dark red velvet, and Victoria Ashford placed it on the restaurant table between them as if it were the bill.
“Don’t open it yet,” she said.
Thomas Reid put his hands flat on the white tablecloth so she wouldn’t see them shaking.
They had met three weeks ago, at the opening of her gallery in Mayfair. He had stood in front of a large black canvas for twenty minutes, and she had come to stand beside him and said, You’re looking at it like it might tell you what to do.
He had laughed. Then he had told her the truth, the one he had never told anyone. That he spent all day making decisions. That at night, sometimes, he wished someone would make them for him.
She hadn’t laughed. She had given him her card.
“Before you read it,” Victoria said now, “I want you to understand three things.”
She was wearing black. Simple, perfectly cut, a single silver chain at her throat. Her dark hair was pinned up. She didn’t raise her voice in the busy restaurant. She never needed to.
“One. Nothing in that folder happens unless you sign it. Two. You can cross out anything. Anything at all. Three.” She leaned forward slightly. “There is a word at the bottom of the last page. If you ever say it, everything stops. Immediately. No questions. No disappointment. I will make you tea and we will talk.”
Thomas swallowed. “What’s the word?”
“You choose it,” she said. “That’s the first thing I’m asking you to decide.”
He read the folder twice in the taxi home, and four more times in his flat in Clerkenwell.
It wasn’t what he had expected. He had expected leather, maybe. Something dramatic. Instead it was careful and clear, typed on heavy cream paper, like a good contract.
He will answer her messages within an hour, unless he is working.
He will tell her honestly when he is tired, sad or unwell.
He will kneel when she asks, and only when she asks.
She decides what he wears on Saturdays.
She decides when the evening ends.
He may cross out any rule. She will never ask why.
On the last page, a blank line, and a heading: Safe word.
He thought about it for a long time. Then he wrote: Blueprint.
He crossed out nothing. He signed at the bottom with the fountain pen his father had given him when he qualified as an architect, and his hand was completely steady.
The first Saturday, she chose a dark grey suit for him and sent a car.
Her flat was at the top of an old building in Marylebone, all white walls and modern art and one enormous window looking over the rooftops. She opened the door herself. She looked at the suit, slowly, from shoes to collar, the way she looked at paintings.
“Good,” she said.
One word. He felt it all the way down his spine.
She poured two glasses of wine and didn’t give him one. She sat in a deep leather armchair and crossed her legs and watched him stand in the middle of the room.
“How do you feel?” she asked.
“Nervous,” he said honestly.
“Good. That was rule two.” She took a sip of wine. “What else?”
“Like I don’t have to think,” Thomas said slowly. “For the first time in a very long time.”
Victoria smiled. It was small and private and devastating.
“Kneel,” she said.
He did.
The carpet was soft under his knees. She leaned forward and held her glass to his lips and let him drink, slowly, her other hand resting lightly on his hair. The city glittered outside the window. Somewhere a church bell rang nine o’clock.
“Tell me your word,” she said quietly.
“Blueprint.”
“Good boy,” said Victoria Ashford. “Now. Let me show you what an evening looks like when I decide everything.”
What followed belonged only to them: to the white room and the slow, deliberate way she took control of every minute, every touch, every breath, until there was nothing left for him to decide and nothing he wanted to. She was strict. She was patient. She was, above everything else, careful with him, like he was the most valuable thing in the gallery.
At midnight, she ended it, exactly as the contract said.
She wrapped him in a soft blanket on the sofa and made him tea, real tea, strong, with too much sugar. She sat beside him with her shoes off and her hair down, and suddenly she didn’t look like a queen at all. She looked like a woman who had worried about him all evening.
“Talk to me,” she said. “What did you like? What didn’t you?”
He told her. Everything. It took an hour.
She listened, and asked questions, and wrote two small notes in a leather notebook. When he finished, she closed it and leaned her head on his shoulder.
“You never said your word,” she said.
“I didn’t need to.”
“You will one day,” she said. “And that will be a good day too. I want you to know that.”
Thomas looked down at her. The strictest woman he had ever met, curled against him under a blanket, worried that he might be afraid to stop her.
“Victoria,” he said. “Same time next Saturday?”
She smiled against his shoulder.
“I decide that,” she said. “But yes.”
Next: Part 2, The Gallery Night. When Victoria’s biggest opening falls apart, Thomas sees the woman behind the rules.
