The Velvet Request – Part 2: The Ritual

Zofia stood in the doorway in a long black dress, her dark hair pinned up, the candlelight behind her.

She looked down at him kneeling in the hallway for a long moment. Then she held out her hand.

“Come,” she said.

He took her hand and stood and followed her into the bedroom.

It was transformed. Dozens of candles on every surface, the windowsill, the dresser, the bookshelves, so the whole room glowed gold. The bed was made with dark red sheets he had never seen. The cello music came from a small speaker in the corner. And on the bedside table, beside a glass of water, sat the leather notebook, open.

“Sit,” said Zofia, pointing at the edge of the bed.

He sat. She sat beside him, close, and picked up the notebook.

“I wrote this for you,” she said. “This week. I want to read it before anything else happens.”

She read in the same calm, low voice she always used for rules. But this was not a list of rules.

Marek. Two years ago you knelt for me for the first time, and you were so afraid your hands shook. I remember thinking: this man is trusting me with something enormous. I promised myself I would never take that for granted.

Last week you asked me for something new. Something you have never asked of anyone. I want you to know what I heard when you asked. I didn’t hear a fantasy. I heard trust. The deepest kind.

So this is my answer.

Yes. But on my terms. Slowly. With a word that stops everything, which you will say the moment you need to, without any guilt, ever. With me watching your face the whole time. And if, at any point, I think you are not all right, I will stop, even if you don’t say the word. Because that is what it means to be in charge of someone you love.

She closed the notebook.

Marek realised there were tears running down his face.

“Your word,” Zofia said gently.

“Wisła,” he whispered. The river. Their river, the one they walked beside every Sunday.

“Good,” she said. “Say it for me now, so I know you can.”

“Wisła.”

“Good. Again tonight, the moment you need it.” She wiped his tears with her thumb. “Now. Stand up and take off the robe.”

What happened next belonged only to them: the candlelight and the dark red sheets and the cello playing softly in the corner, her voice, steady and certain, guiding every moment, and her eyes never once leaving his face. She was patient. She was careful. She checked in with him again and again, and every time he said yes, and every time he meant it.

He never needed to say the word. But he knew, completely, that he could have. And that, it turned out, was what made everything else possible.

Afterwards, she didn’t let him move.

She wrapped him in a soft blanket and held him against her in the warm, candlelit room, his head on her chest, her fingers moving slowly through his hair. She gave him water, holding the glass to his lips. She talked quietly about nothing at all: the river, the weather, a funny thing a client had said at work. She let the silence sit when he didn’t want to talk.

“How do you feel?” she asked, after a long time.

Marek thought about it.

“Like you saw all of me,” he said. “And you didn’t look away.”

Zofia was quiet for a moment.

“I never will,” she said.

At midnight, she got up and brought something from the kitchen. A plate with two slices of sernik, Kraków cheesecake, from the bakery on Józefa Street.

“The friend I called,” she said, sitting back down on the bed. “On Friday. She’s been in a relationship like ours for twenty years. I asked her how to prepare for tonight.” She smiled. “She gave me three pages of advice. The last line was, have cake afterwards. Always cake.”

Marek laughed, a wet, exhausted laugh, and took a slice.

“Is that a rule?” he asked.

“It is now,” said Zofia.

In the morning, he found the leather notebook on his pillow.

She had written one more page, under the letter she had read to him.

Rule 11: When he asks for something that takes courage, I take a week. Not because I doubt him, but because his courage deserves my care.

Rule 12: Always cake.

He kept the notebook in the drawer of his bedside table for the next fifteen years.

There were a great many more rules in it by the end.

The End.
