The Wife Who Took the Reins – Part 2: Home Rules

The promotion came in March, three months after Muskoka, and it came with a suitcase.

“Vancouver,” David said, standing in the kitchen with the letter in his hand. “Six weeks. Opening the new office. Then back home.”

Rachel put down her coffee.

“Six weeks,” she said.

“I can say no.”

“You’ve wanted this job for five years.”

“I know.” He looked at her. “But I’ve wanted this,” he gestured between them, “for ten. And it’s only just started.”

Rachel was quiet for a long moment. She thought about the old David, the one who answered emails at dinner, the one who had become a polite stranger in her house. She thought about the man who had been home at 5:52 every day for three months.

“You’re going,” she said. “And we’re writing new rules.”

They wrote them at the kitchen table on the night before he left.

He calls every night at 9 p.m. Toronto time. No matter what.

He sends one photo every day of something he wants to show her.

She chooses what he wears to the big meetings. He sends a photo before he leaves the hotel.

He goes to bed when she tells him. She will tell him by text.

If either of them feels far away, they say “Muskoka” and the other one calls immediately.

“That last one’s not a safe word,” David said.

“It’s a different kind,” Rachel said. “It means come back to me.”

The first week was easy.

He called at nine every night. He sent photos: the mountains from his hotel window, a sushi place by the water, a seaplane taking off at dawn. Every morning he sent a picture of himself in the shirt and tie she had chosen, and every morning she texted back one word, good, and every morning he walked into the office grinning.

The second week was harder.

The new office was chaos. He worked fourteen hours. On Thursday, he called at 9:14.

“You’re late,” Rachel said.

“I know. I’m sorry. There was a meeting, and,”

“Fourteen minutes.”

“I know.”

She let the silence sit there, the way she had learned to.

“I’m sorry, Rachel,” he said quietly.

“Thank you for saying it,” she said. “Now go to bed. It’s late there. That’s not a request.”

He went. She lay awake in their bed in Toronto, staring at the ceiling, missing him so much it hurt.

The third week, she was the one who broke.

It was a Tuesday. Her mother had a fall. Nothing serious, a sprained wrist, but Rachel spent six hours in a hospital waiting room alone, and drove home in the rain, and sat in the empty house at 8:45 p.m. with her coat still on, and suddenly couldn’t breathe.

She picked up her phone. She typed one word.

Muskoka.

Her phone rang in eleven seconds.

“I’m here,” David said. “I’m here. What happened?”

She told him. She cried. He listened, the way he had learned to at the cottage, without interrupting, without trying to fix anything. When she was finished, he was quiet for a moment.

“Rach,” he said. “Can I ask for something? You can say no.”

“What?”

“Let me look after you tonight. From here. Just this once.”

She almost laughed through her tears. “How?”

“Take your coat off,” he said gently. “Make tea. The chamomile, the one in the blue tin. Then get into bed and put me on speaker and I’ll stay on the phone until you fall asleep.”

She did all of it. He stayed on the line for two hours, talking softly about nothing, the mountains, the seaplanes, the terrible hotel coffee. She fell asleep with the phone on the pillow beside her.

In the morning, she texted him.

Thank you. Rule six, new: either of us can take care of the other when they ask. You did it perfectly.

His reply came instantly.

I learned from the best.

He came home on a Friday, two days early.

She didn’t know. She was in the garden, kneeling in the dirt, planting tulips, when she heard the gate open and looked up and he was standing there with his suitcase, smiling.

“You’re early,” she said.

“I finished early.” He put the suitcase down. “I wanted to be home by six.”

It was 5:52.

Rachel stood up slowly, mud on her knees, and walked over to him.

“You broke a rule,” she said. “You didn’t tell me you were coming.”

“Yes, Rachel.”

“That deserves a consequence.” She took his tie, the one she had chosen that morning without knowing, and pulled him gently toward the house. “Inside. Now.”

What happened next belonged only to them: six weeks of missing each other, the late afternoon sun through the bedroom window, and a marriage that had learned it could stretch across a whole continent and still hold. She was in charge. She had always been, in a way. Now they both knew it, and it made everything easier.

That summer, they went back to the cottage on Lake Muskoka.

On the old dock, in the evening, Rachel handed him a small wooden box. Inside was a brass key ring, engraved with a single word.

Home.

“For the suitcase,” she said. “So you remember where to come back to.”

“I never forget,” David said.

“I know,” said Rachel. “But I like to decide things.”
