Her Kingdom – Part 1

The first rule of Moonstone Games was that nobody argued with Han Ji-woo in a meeting.
Ryan Mitchell broke it on his second day.
“The ending doesn’t work,” he said, in a conference room on the forty-second floor in Gangnam, in front of thirty people. “The player has all this power for sixty hours, and then in the final scene, they just,” he waved a hand at the screen, “win. It’s boring. They should have to give something up.”
The room went silent. Thirty people stared at the table.
At the head of it, Ji-woo looked at him over her tablet. She was thirty-four, the founder and CEO, in a perfectly tailored grey suit. Her black hair was cut in a sharp bob. She had built Moonstone from a two-person studio in a basement into a company with five hundred employees and three of the best-selling games in Asia.
“Give something up,” she repeated slowly.
“Control,” Ryan said. “At the end. They should have to trust someone else. Hand it over.”
Ji-woo didn’t say anything for a long time.
“Stay after the meeting,” she said finally. “Everyone else, we’re done.”
When the room was empty, she stood up and walked to the window. Seoul spread out below them, glittering in the late afternoon, the river curling through it like a silver ribbon.
“You argued with me in front of my team,” she said, without turning around.
“I’m sorry. It’s,” Ryan stopped. “No. I’m not sorry. I was right.”
She turned around. She looked at him with an expression he couldn’t read.
“You were right,” she said. “That’s why you’re still here.”
He let out a breath.
“Next time,” Ji-woo said, “you tell me first. In private. Then I decide if it goes to the team.” She walked slowly toward him. “Understood?”
“Yes.”
She stopped very close to him. She was shorter than him, but it didn’t feel that way.
“Yes, what?” she said quietly.
Ryan felt something go through his whole body, from his scalp to his shoes.
“Yes, Ji-woo,” he said.
Something flickered in her dark eyes. Interest. Recognition. Something else.
“Good,” she said. “You can go.”
It took three months.
Three months of late nights at the studio, rebuilding the ending of the game together. Three months of him bringing her ideas in private, and her listening, and saying no or yes or again, better, and him going away and doing it again, better. Three months of dinner at the little barbecue restaurant across the street at midnight, where she ordered for both of them without asking and he never once complained.
He noticed that he was happier than he had been in years.
She noticed that he never, ever argued with her in public again.
“Why do you like it?” Ji-woo asked him one night, at the barbecue restaurant, turning pork belly on the grill with silver tongs. “When I tell you what to do.”
Ryan thought about it carefully. She didn’t like fast answers.
“Because I trust you,” he said. “You see the whole map. I only see the level I’m on. When you decide, I can stop worrying about everything else and just be good at my part.”
She put the tongs down.
“That’s the ending of the game,” she said slowly. “That’s exactly the ending.”
“I know,” Ryan said. “I wrote it about you.”
She was quiet in the taxi.
She was quiet in the lift up to her apartment, on the fifty-first floor of a glass tower overlooking the Han River. She was quiet as she opened the door and walked in and turned on one lamp and stood with her back to him, looking out at the lights.
“Ryan,” she said. “I need to say something, and I need you to listen like it’s a meeting.”
“Okay.”
“I don’t do anything casually. Not games. Not people.” She turned around. “If we do this, it’s my kingdom. My rules. Every day, not just at night. Your schedule. Your choices, the ones you give me. And a word, yours, that ends everything the moment you say it. I will never punish you for using it. Never.” Her voice was very steady. “Do you understand what you’re asking for?”
He did. He had thought about it for three months.
“Moonstone,” he said.
“What?”
“My word. Moonstone.” He smiled slightly. “It’s the only thing in your kingdom I’ll never let you control.”
Ji-woo stared at him. Then, for the first time since he had met her, she laughed. Really laughed, surprised and delighted, one hand over her mouth.
“That’s very good,” she said. “That’s a very good word.”
“I’m a very good designer.”
She walked across the room to him. She took his tie in her fingers and pulled him down, slowly, until his face was level with hers.
“Kneel,” she said.
He knelt.
What happened next belonged only to them: to the glass walls and the whole glittering city below, to the low, unhurried certainty in her voice and the way he answered every word without hesitation. She ran the night the way she ran her worlds. With vision. With control. And underneath it all, with a care so precise that he never once felt lost.
The game launched in December.
The reviews called the ending one of the best in years. In the final scene, after sixty hours of building and fighting and ruling, the player stands before a queen in a tower of moonlight and must choose: keep all their power, or kneel and trust her with it.
Ninety-one percent of players chose to kneel.
At the launch party, a journalist asked Ji-woo where the idea had come from.
She looked across the crowded room at her lead designer, who was standing exactly where she had told him to stand, holding the drink she had chosen for him, waiting for her signal.
“From someone who argued with me once,” she said. “Only once.”
She raised one finger. Across the room, Ryan smiled, put down his drink, and came to her side.
Next: Part 2, Expansion Pack. A job offer from Los Angeles, and the one decision Ji-woo refuses to make.
