The email from Los Angeles arrived on a Wednesday, and Ryan did exactly what the rules said.
He didn’t mention it at work. He didn’t mention it at lunch. He waited until 11 p.m., in the apartment on the fifty-first floor, when Ji-woo had finished her calls and was sitting by the window with a glass of wine. Then he knelt beside her chair and held out his phone.
“Rule one,” he said. “I tell you first. In private.”
She read the email. Her face didn’t change at all.
Brightfall Studios. Creative Director. Los Angeles. Your own team. Your own game.
It was the biggest studio in America. It was the job every designer in the world wanted.
Ji-woo handed the phone back.
“Well?” Ryan asked.
“Well what?”
“What do I do?”
She looked down at him for a long time.
“No,” she said.
His heart dropped. “No, I can’t go?”
“No,” Ji-woo said, “I’m not deciding this one.”
He stared at her.
“You decide everything,” he said. “That’s the whole point.”
“I decide what you eat. When you sleep. What you wear to the launch party. Which of your ideas goes to the team.” She put her glass down. “I don’t decide your life. That was never the deal. That was never the kingdom.”
“But I want you to.”
“I know.” Her voice softened, very slightly. “That’s exactly why I won’t.”
She stood up and walked to the window. Seoul glittered below them, the river black and gold.
“If I tell you to stay,” she said, without turning around, “and in five years you wonder what you missed, you’ll blame me. Quietly. A little. Every day. And I would deserve it.” She turned. “And if I tell you to go, you’ll think I didn’t want you.”
“Do you?” Ryan asked quietly. “Want me to stay?”
She looked at him for a long moment.
“That is the one question,” said Ji-woo, “I’m not allowed to answer.”
He thought about it for six days.
He walked along the Han River at night. He called his mother in Ohio, who cried. He called his best friend from college, who said are you insane, take it. He sat in the empty Moonstone office at 3 a.m. and looked at the ending of the game they had built together, the queen in the tower of moonlight, the player kneeling.
Ninety-one percent had chosen to kneel.
He had never asked himself why.
On the seventh day, he flew to Los Angeles.
The Brightfall offices were enormous. Glass and palm trees and free sushi and a slide between floors. The head of the studio, a cheerful man in a hoodie, walked him around for three hours, showing him everything. Every door would open for him here. Every idea would be his to decide.
In the last meeting, the man leaned back and smiled.
“So, Ryan. Total freedom. No one telling you what to do. What do you think?”
Ryan looked around the glass room. At the sunshine. At the slide.
And he understood, finally, the answer he’d been looking for.
“I think,” he said slowly, “that I don’t actually want total freedom.”
The man blinked.
“I want to build something with someone who sees the whole map,” Ryan said. “And I already have that. I just needed to fly eleven hours to find out I chose it.”
He landed in Seoul at 6 a.m. and went straight to Moonstone.
Ji-woo was in her office, alone, already working, in her grey suit. She looked up as he came in. She didn’t say anything.
“I said no,” Ryan told her.
For one tiny moment, something moved across her face, something huge and relieved and unguarded. Then it was gone.
“Why?” she asked.
“Because I wanted to make one decision,” he said, “that was completely mine. And I decided this.” He knelt beside her desk. “You. Your rules. Your kingdom. On purpose.”
Ji-woo looked down at him for a long, long time.
Then she stood up, walked around the desk, and closed the blinds.
“You flew to Los Angeles without telling me,” she said.
“Yes, Ji-woo.”
“You missed two days of work.”
“Yes, Ji-woo.”
“And you came into my office at six in the morning and knelt in front of the glass wall.” She took his tie. “Where anyone could see.”
“Yes, Ji-woo.”
“Three rules,” she said softly. “Three consequences. Tonight.”
He smiled. “Yes, Ji-woo.”
That night belonged only to them: the glass walls, the whole glittering city, the low and certain command in her voice and the deep, chosen peace in his. She was in charge, as always. But tonight, for the first time, she let him see how much she had wanted him to come home.
The next week, the Moonstone website announced a new position.
Co-Creative Director: Ryan Mitchell.
The press release said it was a promotion. Inside the company, everyone knew what it really was.
On the wall of Ji-woo’s office, a new framed print appeared. It was concept art from the game, the queen in her tower of moonlight. In the corner, in small neat handwriting, she had added three words in Korean and English.
Chosen, not taken.
The End.
