Ice Queen – Part 1

“Again,” said Freya Nilsson.

Erik Lindqvist was lying flat on his back on the ice for the ninth time that morning. His hip hurt. His pride hurt more.

“I’m a hockey player,” he said to the ceiling of the empty rink. “Not a ballerina.”

“You’re a hockey player with a torn hip flexor who can’t stand on one leg for ten seconds.” Freya glided to a stop beside his head, perfectly balanced on one blade, arms folded. “Again.”

He looked up at her.

She was thirty-four, two-time European champion, retired four years ago at the top of her career. The newspapers had called her Isdrottningen, the Ice Queen, because she never smiled on the podium. Up close, she still didn’t. She had pale blond hair in a tight braid, a black training jacket zipped to the chin, and eyes the colour of the ice.

“Do you ever say anything nice?” Erik asked.

“Yes,” said Freya. “When it’s true. Get up.”

His team had sent him there after the injury, and after the fight in the locker room, and after the photos of him outside a nightclub at 4 a.m. two nights before a semi-final.

Six weeks with Nilsson, the coach had said. She fixes balance. And attitude.

On the first day, Freya had sat him down in the cold, empty stands of the old rink in Södermalm and laid out her terms.

“On my ice, you do exactly what I say. When I say it. How I say it. No arguing, no jokes, no showing off.” She held up one finger. “And if anything I ask hurts in a way that’s wrong, not just hard, but wrong, you say red. And I stop. Immediately. Always. Understood?”

“What if I don’t like what you say?”

“Then you leave,” she said, “and you never play professionally again.”

He’d stayed.

By the third week, something had changed.

He could hold a single-leg glide for a full minute now. He could spin without falling. His hip was healing faster than the physio had predicted. And he had noticed, with growing confusion, that he liked it. Not the skating. The way she said again. The way she never had to say anything twice. The way, when he finally got something right, she said good in a low voice that he thought about all evening.

He had never in his life done what anyone told him. His coaches, his father, his agent: he had fought them all.

He didn’t fight Freya. He didn’t want to.

“Why is it different with you?” he asked her one evening, after everyone else had gone. They were sitting on the bench by the boards, unlacing their skates.

Freya didn’t answer right away.

“Because I’m not trying to win against you,” she said finally. “Everyone else wants to beat you. Control you. I just want you to be good.”

Erik looked at her. She was looking at her skates, not at him, and for the first time, he saw something underneath the ice. Something tired and lonely.

“Freya,” he said. “Can I ask you something? Off the ice?”

She looked up.

“Off the ice,” she said slowly, “you can ask anything.”

“Do you ever,” he stopped. Started again. “Do you ever want someone to listen to you like I do? Not just in training?”

The rink was very quiet. The big lights hummed. Somewhere a door banged in the wind.

Freya Nilsson, the Ice Queen, looked at him for a long, long time.

“Yes,” she said. “I have wanted that for a very long time.”

Her flat was on the top floor of an old building in Gamla Stan, with sloping ceilings and wooden beams and a window looking out over frozen water and the lights of the old town.

She closed the door behind them and turned to face him.

“Same rules,” she said. “My ice. My voice. And red.”

“Yes,” Erik said.

“Yes what?”

He looked at her, standing in her coat in the dim lamplight, and understood exactly what she wanted to hear.

“Yes, Freya.”

Something softened at the edges of her face.

“Good,” she said. “Take off your coat. Slowly.”

What happened next belonged only to them: to the old wooden beams and the frozen harbour glittering outside, to the cool, precise way she took control of every moment, and the surprising warmth underneath it, like the first sun on spring ice. She was demanding. She was exact. And when he did everything right, she said good in that low voice, again and again, until he forgot he had ever wanted to fight anyone.

He played his first match back six weeks later.

The arena in Stockholm was full. Sixteen thousand people. He scored twice. In the third period, he did a tight, perfect turn on one blade to lose a defender, a move straight from figure skating, and the commentators lost their minds.

After the match, a reporter shoved a microphone in his face.

“Erik! That turn! Where did you learn that?”

Erik looked up into the stands.

Freya was in the front row, in her black jacket, arms folded. She wasn’t smiling. She never smiled in public.

But she nodded, once.

“From the best coach in Sweden,” Erik said. “She makes me do everything again.”

That night, in Gamla Stan, she told him that he had been good. He decided it was the best review he had ever received.
