Ice Queen – Part 2: The Smile

The photo was on the front page of Expressen on Monday morning.

It was grainy, taken from across the street with a long lens. Erik and Freya in Gamla Stan, on the steps outside her building. His hand on her waist. Her face turned up toward his.

The headline was three words.

ISDROTTNINGEN SMÄLTER.

The Ice Queen Melts.

Freya read it standing in her kitchen at 6 a.m. with a cup of coffee going cold in her hand. Erik watched her from the doorway. She didn’t say anything for a long time.

“I’m sorry,” he said.

“It isn’t your fault.” Her voice was very flat. “I knew someone would see eventually.”

“Freya.”

“I have a practice at seven,” she said, and put the cup down, and walked out without looking at him.

She didn’t come to the rink.

For the first time in four months, the ice was empty at seven. Erik stood at the boards in his skates, alone, and felt the old panic rising. The final was on Saturday. The biggest game of his career. And the one voice he had learned to listen to had gone silent.

His phone was full of messages. Teammates making jokes. His agent, delighted about the publicity. A journalist asking for a quote.

Nothing from her.

He skated alone for two hours. Single-leg glides. Spins. Turns. Everything she had taught him. He fell twice. Each time, he heard her voice in his head, again, and got up.

He found her that evening at the old outdoor rink in Vasaparken, where she had learned to skate as a child.

It was dark and freezing and nearly empty. A few kids. A man with a dog. And Freya, alone in the middle of the ice, not skating. Just standing there with her hands in her pockets, looking at the snow.

He walked out onto the ice in his boots and stopped beside her.

“When I was nineteen,” she said, without looking at him, “I fell in love with my coach. Everyone found out. The newspapers wrote that I only won because of him. For three years, every medal I won, they wrote it was his.” She was quiet. “I promised myself nobody would ever write about me like that again. So I stopped smiling. I stopped letting anyone close.”

Erik didn’t say anything. He had learned from her how to wait.

“And now they’re writing that I melted,” Freya said. “Like it’s a weakness.”

“Is it?” he asked quietly.

She finally looked at him.

“No,” she said. “That’s what scares me.”

He knelt on the ice in front of her.

The kids stopped skating to stare. The man with the dog stopped. Erik didn’t care.

“You taught me to do exactly what you say,” he said. “So tell me what to do. About the newspapers. About Saturday. About us. I’ll do it. Whatever you decide.”

Freya looked down at him, kneeling in the snow, Sweden’s most famous hockey player, waiting for her word.

“Anything?” she said.

“Anything.”

For the first time all day, something moved at the corner of her mouth.

“Then get up,” Freya said. “You’re getting your trousers wet. And on Saturday, you’re going to win.”

On Saturday, the arena held sixteen thousand people and a hundred cameras.

Half of them, it turned out, were pointed at the front row, where the Ice Queen sat in her black jacket with her arms folded, exactly as she had sat at every game.

Erik scored once in the first period. Once in the second. In the third, with forty seconds left and the score tied, he took the puck from his own end and skated the length of the ice, and at the very last moment he did the turn. The one-blade figure-skating turn, the one she had made him practise a thousand times. The defender fell. The goalie dived the wrong way.

The arena went completely insane.

When the final whistle blew, his teammates buried him on the ice. And when he finally got free, he skated straight to the boards in front of the front row and stopped.

The cameras swung toward them.

Freya stood up.

And then, in front of sixteen thousand people and every camera in Sweden, the Ice Queen smiled.

It was not a small smile. It was enormous, helpless, real, the kind of smile that changed her entire face. The crowd saw it on the giant screen and roared even louder.

The front page on Monday was a photograph of that smile.

The headline was one word.

DROTTNINGEN.

The Queen.

That night in Gamla Stan, she was not smiling.

“You knelt in Vasaparken,” she said, standing at the window, her back to him. “In public. Without permission.”

“Yes, Freya.”

“And you looked at the cameras after the final.” She turned. “I told you once. Only listen to me.”

“Yes, Freya.”

She walked toward him slowly. The harbour glittered behind her through the old glass.

“Two rules broken,” she said. “Two consequences.”

He swallowed. “Yes, Freya.”

What followed belonged only to them: the old wooden beams and the frozen harbour, the cool, exact command in her voice, and underneath it now a warmth she no longer bothered to hide. She was strict. She was precise. And at the very end, when he had done everything right, she smiled at him in the dark, the way she had smiled in the arena, just for him.
