The Museum After Dark – Part 1: The Alarm

The alarm in Gallery Nine went off at 1:14 a.m., as it had on three previous nights, and Andrés arrived at a jog with his torch in one hand and his sandwich in the other.
"It's me," called a voice from behind a scaffold. "Sorry. Again."
Lucía stood on a platform in front of a huge dark painting, a magnifying visor pushed up on her forehead, a cotton swab in each hand. She was thirty-one, a conservator, with paint on her cuffs and an expression of mild apology.
"The sensor thinks you're a thief," said Andrés.
"I'm a very quiet thief."
"You are the only one who has triggered it four times."
He was thirty-six, broad, calm, with greying stubble and a security badge that said A. Ortega. He'd worked this shift for eleven years and had never once been asked what he thought of the art.
"What are you doing?" he said, setting down his torch.
"Cleaning a Goya." She turned back to the canvas. "There are three hundred years of varnish. It makes everything look like tea. Under it..." She dabbed gently. A patch of vivid blue appeared. "Sky."
He stepped closer. In the half-dark gallery, a square of ancient sky had come back to life under her swab, rich and bright. It was a small miracle, and for a moment neither spoke.
"I have walked past this painting every night for eleven years," said Andrés, quietly. "I did not know it had a sky."
"Most people don't."
"Can I stay and watch?"
She glanced at him, surprised. "It's very slow."
"I'm not in a hurry."
So he pulled up a chair, ate his sandwich, and watched the sky come back. At four, she shared her flask of coffee. At five, she laughed at one of his terrible jokes.
"Can I ask you something?" said Lucía.
"Yes."
"Will you sit here tomorrow, too?"
"Green?" said Andrés, a word he'd heard her mutter at the canvas.
"Green," said Lucía, smiling. "Very green."
