The Museum After Dark – Part 2: Closing Time

It took three weeks. Each night, Andrés brought two coffees and a pastry, and each night the sky grew larger. He learned to hold the lamp at the right angle, to hand over swabs without being asked. She learned that he had a daughter in Valencia, that he had once wanted to paint, that he hummed old boleros when he thought nobody was listening.
On the last night, she stepped back from the canvas and let her arms fall.
"Done," she said.
The painting glowed. The sky was a deep, living blue, the figures warm and sharp. It looked as if it had been painted yesterday and had waited three hundred years to be seen.
Andrés took off his cap. "Madre mía," he whispered.
"I know."
"It's beautiful."
"It always was. We only found it." She stripped off her gloves, and her hands trembled slightly. "That's the part I love."
They stood side by side in the dim gallery, the silence soft around them. The old building creaked. Far off, a clock struck four.
"Can I ask you something?" said Andrés.
"Yes."
"The alarm. Was it ever really faulty?"
Lucía went pink. "I may have... tripped it. Once or twice. On purpose."
"Why?"
"Because someone had to come," she said, "and I hoped it would be you."
He laughed, softly, helplessly. "May I kiss you, Lucía?"
"Yes," she said. "And if I say stop, you must tell the director about the alarm."
"That's a terrible threat."
"I know."
He kissed her gently, a warm hand coming up to her cheek, tasting of coffee and cinnamon. She leaned in and kissed him back, her fingers curling in his collar, while the great painting glowed over them like a window.
When they parted, both of them were smiling.
"Green?" he asked.
"Green," said Lucía. "Very green."
The sensor in Gallery Nine went off again at 1:14 the next night. This time, nobody came to check, because the two of them were already there.
