Safe Word: Lighthouse – Part 1

“Lighthouse.”

Callum said it so quietly that for a second Naledi wasn’t sure she’d heard.

Then she saw his face, and everything stopped.

She had been standing over him, speaking low, in the voice she used only for him. Her hand had been on his jaw. The room had been dim and warm, the windows open to the sound of the sea below their flat in Muizenberg. And now he was looking up at her with wide, wet eyes, and his whole body had gone rigid.

Naledi took her hand away from his face instantly.

“Okay,” she said. Her voice changed completely. Calm. Soft. Steady. “Okay. Everything’s stopped. You’re safe. I’ve got you.”

She sat down on the edge of the bed. She didn’t touch him yet.

“Can I hold you?” she asked.

He nodded. He couldn’t speak.

She pulled him against her chest and wrapped both arms around him, and he started to shake.

They had met eight months earlier in the emergency department at Groote Schuur Hospital.

He had come in at 3 a.m. with a broken wrist from a surfing accident, and she had been the doctor on duty, twenty hours into a twenty-four-hour shift, sharp and fast and utterly in control. She had set his wrist without anaesthetic because he’d refused it, and when he’d finally yelped, she’d said, You were warned. Next time, listen to me.

He had come back two weeks later, with flowers, to say he would.

They had talked about it from the start. What he wanted. What she liked. How in the hospital she made life-or-death decisions every hour, and how at home, with him, taking control felt different. Warmer. Like care instead of pressure. They had made rules. They had chosen a word.

Lighthouse, he’d said. Because it’s the thing that tells you where the rocks are.

In eight months, he had never used it once.

She held him for a long time.

She didn’t ask what was wrong. She just held him, and breathed slowly so he could follow her breathing, the way she did with frightened patients. She pulled the blanket up over his shoulders. She stroked his hair. Outside, the waves kept rolling in, steady and endless.

After twenty minutes, his shaking stopped.

“I’m sorry,” he said into her shoulder.

“Don’t be.”

“I ruined it.”

“You didn’t ruin anything.” Naledi pulled back just enough to look at his face. “Callum. Listen to me. You did exactly the right thing. That word is the most important rule we have. It’s more important than all the others put together.”

He looked at her, uncertain.

“I thought you’d be disappointed,” he said.

“I’m proud of you,” she said. “Do you know how many people never say it? Because they think they’ll lose something?”

His eyes filled again.

“Do you want to tell me what happened?” she asked gently. “You don’t have to. Not tonight. Not ever, if you don’t want to.”

He told her.

It wasn’t anything she had done. It was something she had said, a phrase, an ordinary phrase, you should have known better, that his father used to say. In a very different voice, in a very different way. It had come out of nowhere and pulled him straight back to being twelve years old in a cold kitchen in Glasgow.

Naledi listened without interrupting. When he finished, she was quiet for a while.

“Thank you for telling me,” she said. “I won’t ever say that again.”

“It’s not your fault.”

“I know. But I still won’t say it.” She took his face in her hands, very gently, nothing like before. “That’s what being in charge actually means, Cal. It doesn’t mean I get whatever I want. It means I’m responsible for you. For keeping you safe. Even from things neither of us saw coming.”

He leaned his forehead against hers.

“I didn’t know it would feel like this,” he whispered. “Saying the word. I thought it would feel like failing.”

“And?”

“It felt like,” he stopped. “Like you caught me.”

“I did,” Naledi said. “I always will.”

She made him rooibos tea with honey in the kitchen and wrapped him in her big hospital hoodie, and they sat on the balcony with their feet up on the railing and watched the moon over False Bay.

“What now?” Callum asked.

“Now we sleep,” Naledi said. “Tomorrow we talk again. And next week, if you want, we try again. Slowly. With some new rules.” She took a sip of tea. “And if you don’t want to, we don’t. Nothing about us depends on it.”

He turned to look at her.

“Can I ask you to do one thing?” he said.

“Anything.”

“Tell me what to do,” he said. “Right now. Something small. I just,” he swallowed. “I want to know it’s still there. That it’s still us.”

Naledi looked at him for a long moment in the moonlight. Then she put her tea down, and when she spoke, her voice had changed again. Not the warm, soft voice of the last hour. The other one. Low. Certain. His.

“Finish your tea,” she said. “Then come to bed. And sleep. That’s an order.”

Callum let out a long breath, and something in his shoulders finally let go.

“Yes, Naledi,” he said.

What happened after was only sleep: long and deep and peaceful, his head on her chest, her hand in his hair, the sound of the sea coming through the open window. It was the most intimate night they had ever had.

In the morning, there was a note on the kitchen table, in her quick doctor’s handwriting.

Night shift. Home at 8 a.m.

Rule 1 (new): We talk about the rules every Sunday.

Rule 2 (new): Lighthouse is never a failure. Every time you say it, I trust you more.

Rule 3 (new): Breakfast. Eggs. Eat them all.

— N.

He read it three times. Then he made the eggs, and ate them all, and put the note on the fridge, where it stayed for the next eleven years.

Next: Part 2, Rocks and Light. The night Naledi comes home broken, and Callum has to catch her.
