Safe Word: Lighthouse – Part 2: Rocks and Light

Naledi came home from the night shift at 8:14 a.m. and didn’t say good morning.
Callum heard the door. He heard her keys hit the bowl. He heard her bag drop in the hallway. And then he heard nothing, for a long time.
He found her sitting on the kitchen floor with her back against the fridge, still in her green scrubs, her stethoscope around her neck, staring at nothing.
He knelt down in front of her.
“Nal?”
She didn’t look at him.
“A boy,” she said. Her voice was flat and far away. “Seventeen. Car accident on the N2 at four a.m. I worked on him for an hour and ten minutes.” She swallowed. “I had to tell his mother.”
Callum didn’t say anything. He didn’t touch her yet. He waited, the way she had waited for him on the night he said his word.
“I’m fine,” Naledi said. “I just need a minute.”
He looked at her. At the woman who was always in charge. Who made life-or-death decisions every hour. Who had held him for twenty minutes while he shook, and never once let him see her afraid.
“Naledi,” he said gently. “Rule two.”
She finally looked at him.
Rule two, from the note on the fridge. Lighthouse is never a failure.
“That rule is for you,” she said.
“Is it?” Callum asked quietly. “Or is it for both of us?”
For a long moment, she didn’t answer.
Then her face crumpled, and the strongest woman he had ever known put her hands over her eyes and said, very quietly, “Lighthouse.”
He pulled her into his arms on the kitchen floor.
She cried for a long time. Big, shaking, exhausted sobs, eleven years of hospital nights in them. He held her. He breathed slowly so she could follow him, the way she had taught him. He didn’t say anything clever. He just held on.
When she finally stopped, she was limp against his chest.
“Okay,” Callum said softly. “I’ve got you. Here’s what’s going to happen. Can I tell you?”
She nodded against him.
“A shower. Hot. I’ll get your clothes. Then rooibos with honey. Then bed. I’m calling the hospital and telling them you’re off tomorrow. And I’m not leaving you alone today. Okay?”
She was quiet. Then, very quietly, in a voice he had never heard from her:
“Okay.”
He did all of it.
He ran the shower and laid out her softest clothes. He made the tea exactly the way she made it for him. He called the hospital and was firm, polite and immovable, and she listened from the bed with an expression of tired astonishment.
“You were very bossy on the phone,” she said when he came back.
“I learned from the best.”
She almost smiled.
He climbed into bed beside her and she curled against him, her head on his chest, and outside the sea rolled in and out at Muizenberg, steady and endless. She slept for nine hours. He didn’t move once.
She woke at six in the evening, with the sun going down over False Bay.
She lay still for a long time, watching the light on the ceiling.
“Cal,” she said. “I need to tell you something.”
“Okay.”
“I’ve been scared,” Naledi said slowly, “that if I ever needed you like that, it would ruin everything. That you’d stop trusting me. That I’d stop being,” she searched for the word, “the one in charge.”
He turned his head on the pillow to look at her.
“Do you feel less in charge?”
She thought about it honestly.
“No,” she said, sounding surprised. “I feel,” she stopped. “I feel like I can put it down sometimes. And pick it up again. And it’ll still be there.”
“It will,” Callum said. “I’ll keep it safe for you. The way you keep me safe.”
She looked at him for a long time. Then she reached up and touched his face.
“When did you get so strong?”
“Rule two,” he said. “Every time you say it, I trust you more.”
Three weeks later, he took her to Cape Point.
They drove down the peninsula on a Sunday morning, past the baboons and the fynbos and the wild, empty beaches, and climbed the long path up to the old lighthouse on the cliff at the very end of Africa. The wind was enormous. Two oceans met below them in white water and spray.
At the top, by the white lighthouse, he stopped.
“You know why I chose the word?” he asked.
“Because it tells you where the rocks are,” Naledi said.
“That’s half of it.” He took her hand. “It’s also the thing that brings you home.”
He knelt.
Not the way he knelt for her at home. On one knee, on the windy stone path, with a small box in his hand and tourists stopping all around them.
“You don’t have to answer now,” Callum said. “You can say lighthouse. I’ll understand.”
Naledi looked down at him. The wind pulled at her hair. Her eyes were very bright.
“Stand up,” she said.
He stood.
“That’s an order,” she said. “And so is this.” She took the box out of his hand. “Yes.”
That night, at home, she was entirely herself again.
What happened belonged only to them: the sea through the open window, the low, certain voice he loved, and the deep, calm trust between two people who had each, on the worst night, been caught. She was in charge. She always would be. And now they both knew that the strongest thing she could do was, sometimes, let go.
The note is still on the fridge. There is a new line at the bottom, in her quick doctor’s handwriting.
Rule 4: Lighthouse works both ways.
The End.
