Silk Thread, Jaipur – Part 1: The Wrong Knot

The sari was supposed to be two hundred years old. Kabir Rao needed only one look to know it was finished last month. The knot inside the border was his own.
Jaipur glows pink at sunset. The old walls, the palace windows, the markets full of brass and marigolds all turn the colour of rose petals.
Kabir had loved textiles since he was a child sitting at his grandmother's loom. Now he designed for his own small studio in the old city: block prints, silk brocades, saris that shimmered like water. He wore his work. Today it was a rose-silk kurta, kohl around his eyes and silver bangles that rang when he moved his hands.
The heritage hotel had invited him to see their newest treasure: a royal wedding sari, said to be from the 1820s, bought for an enormous sum.
The curator, Ananya Mehra, led him into the cool, dim museum room. She was brisk and serious, with a pencil tucked behind her ear.
"Our experts have verified it," she said. "But the owner wanted a designer's eye."
Under the glass, the sari was breathtaking. Deep red silk, gold thread, peacocks woven into the border.
Kabir leaned closer. Then closer still.
Inside the border, where no one would ever look, was a tiny knot. A double twist with a loop. His grandmother had taught it to him, and he had taught it to exactly one other person.
His mentor. Devraj Singh.
"This isn't two hundred years old," Kabir said quietly.
Ananya's face went pale. "That's impossible. It came with papers."
"Papers can be woven too," he said.
When he left the hotel, a motorbike followed his auto-rickshaw all the way back to the old city. And when he reached his studio, the door was open.
His notebooks of patterns were gone.
Next: Part 2, The Master. A workshop behind the bazaar, a covered loom, and an old man who wanted to save the looms.
