Devraj moved faster than Kabir had ever seen him move. He pulled back a hanging rug to reveal a low wooden door.

"The old dye yard. It comes out by the stepwell. Go."

"Come with me."

"Someone has to talk to them," Devraj said. He pressed the notebook into Kabir's hands. "Take this. Take everything. Give it to the police." He paused. "Let one of us be honest."

Kabir ran. Through the dye yard, past vats of indigo and madder, his bangles muffled under his sleeve. Out through a crumbling arch into the quiet of the old stepwell, where Ananya was waiting in her car, engine running, because she had refused to let him go alone.

He called Inspector Farah Qureshi from the passenger seat, his voice shaking.

By evening, the dealer had been arrested at his warehouse, with six more fake "royal" textiles packed for export. Devraj was found unharmed in his workshop, sitting calmly at his loom. He confessed everything.

The court was gentle with him in the end, because of his age and his full confession. He was ordered to repay what he could. And he made one request: that the fake sari be kept, labelled honestly, as the work of a living master.

Ananya hung it in the hotel museum with a new sign. Woven in Jaipur, 2026. A forgery and a masterpiece.

On opening day, Kabir stood in front of it for a long time.

"Will you forgive him?" Ananya asked.

"I think I already have," Kabir said. "He was right about one thing. Nobody pays for real work." He paused. "So I am going to teach it. Free. To anyone who wants to sit at a loom."

Ananya smiled, took the pencil from behind her ear, and wrote something on a card.

"Put me down as your first student," she said.

He looked at the card. It was a time and an address. Dinner. Tomorrow. Rooftop.

Kabir laughed, and his bangles rang.

Below them, the whole city was turning pink.

Next: Continuity, Seoul, a makeup artist, a scar on the wrong side of a face, and a set where nothing is quite what it seems.
