Trust Fall – Part 1: What It Means

“Can I ask you something weird?” Jordan said.

They were on the ferry to Bainbridge Island, standing at the rail in the cold wind, watching Seattle get smaller behind them. Maya had her hands in the pockets of his jacket, which she had stolen three years ago and never given back.

“Weird is my favourite kind of question,” she said.

“Promise you won’t laugh.”

“I can’t promise that. You know I can’t promise that.” She bumped his shoulder. “But I promise I won’t laugh at you.”

Jordan looked out at the grey water for a long time. A seagull hung in the air beside the ferry, not moving, just riding the wind.

“There’s something I’ve wanted to try,” he said finally. “For a long time. Years. Before I met you.” He swallowed. “And I’ve never told anyone, because I was scared of what it meant.”

Maya stopped smiling. Not because she was upset. Because she could see he was serious.

“Okay,” she said gently. “Tell me.”

He told her.

He said it so quietly that she had to lean in to hear him over the wind and the engine. When he finished, he didn’t look at her. He stared at the water, his jaw tight, waiting.

Maya was quiet for a moment.

“Jordan,” she said. “Look at me.”

He looked at her. His face was red, and not just from the cold.

“That’s it?” Maya said. “That’s the big scary secret?”

“You think it’s weird.”

“I think it’s really common, actually. I think about a third of the guys I’ve ever known have probably wanted to try that and never said it.” She tilted her head. “Why were you scared?”

He took a long breath.

“Because,” he said, “I grew up in a small town in Idaho where the worst thing you could be was,” he stopped. “Where people decided what you were based on what you liked. And I’ve always been scared that if I liked this, it meant something about me. That I wasn’t,” he searched for the words, “who I thought I was.”

Maya didn’t say anything for a moment. The ferry horn sounded, long and low, as they came around the point.

Then she took both of his hands in hers.

“Can I tell you what I think it means?” she said.

He nodded.

“I think it means you trust me,” Maya said. “A lot. Enough to want to be vulnerable with me in a way you’ve never been with anyone.” She squeezed his hands. “That’s all. It doesn’t change who you are. You’re still the guy who cries at dog adoption videos and makes terrible puns and holds my hair when I’ve had too much tequila. Liking something in bed is just liking something in bed.”

Jordan stared at her.

“You really think that?”

“I know that,” said Maya. “And if anyone in Idaho has a problem with it, they can come and talk to me.”

He laughed, a shaky, surprised laugh, and she pulled him into a hug at the rail of the ferry while the wind tore at their hair.

They talked about it all weekend.

On a long walk through the woods on the island, with the rain dripping off the cedars. Over clam chowder in a tiny restaurant by the harbour. In the small rented cabin at night, lying in bed, the fire burning down.

Maya asked a lot of questions. What he was curious about. What scared him. What would make him feel safe. What would make him want to stop.

“You’ve done this before?” Jordan asked at one point, amazed. “The,” he waved his hand, “the talking part?”

“No,” Maya admitted. “But I’m a project manager. I scope things.”

He laughed so hard he fell off the bed.

On Sunday night, she wrote it all down on the back of a ferry ticket, in tiny handwriting. Go slow. Check in a lot. Stop whenever. No jokes during, only after. And at the bottom, a blank line.

“Your word,” she said. “If you want to stop. Anything you want.”

Jordan thought about it.

“Ferry,” he said.

Maya smiled.

“Because it’s where you told me?”

“Because,” said Jordan, “it’s where I stopped being scared.”
