Trust Fall – Part 2: The Fall

It rained in Seattle on Friday, which was not news, because it always rained in Seattle.

Jordan got home from work at six and found the apartment dark except for the lamp in the bedroom and a note on the kitchen counter, in Maya’s small, neat project-manager handwriting.

Dinner is in the oven. Eat it. Shower. Then come and find me. You can still change your mind. I mean it. — M.

Under it, she had stuck the ferry ticket with the list on the back.

He read it three times. Then he ate the dinner, lasagne, his favourite, without tasting any of it, and showered, and stood in the hallway outside the bedroom door with his heart hammering.

He could change his mind. She meant it. He knew she meant it.

He didn’t want to.

He knocked.

“Come in,” said Maya.

She was sitting cross-legged in the middle of the bed in one of his old T-shirts, with her laptop open, looking exactly like she did when she was planning a work presentation. When he came in, she closed the laptop and put it on the floor.

“Hi,” she said.

“Hi.”

“Scared?”

“Yes.”

“Me too,” said Maya, and smiled. “Come here.”

He sat on the edge of the bed. She shuffled over and sat beside him, shoulder to shoulder, and took his hand.

“Here’s the plan,” she said. “Step one, we talk for a bit. Step two, I tell you what’s going to happen, every step, before it happens. Step three, I check in with you. A lot. Probably annoyingly. Step four,” she held up the ferry ticket, “if you say ferry, everything stops, I put the kettle on, and we watch dog adoption videos until you feel okay.”

Jordan laughed, a little shakily.

“You made a project plan.”

“I made a Gantt chart,” said Maya. “It’s on the laptop. I’ll spare you.”

They talked for a long time. About nothing, at first. Her day. His day. The rain. Then, slowly, about the thing they were about to do, and how he was feeling, and how she was feeling, and what he needed.

“I need you to keep looking at me,” Jordan said. “So I know it’s you.”

“I can do that.”

“And I need you to,” he stopped. “I need you to tell me I’m still me. After.”

Maya turned to face him. In the lamplight, her eyes were very soft.

“Jordan,” she said. “You’re going to be exactly you. The whole time. I’ll make sure.”

What happened next belonged only to them: the rain on the window and the warm lamp and the city lights blurred beyond the glass, her voice steady and kind, telling him each step before it came, her eyes never once leaving his. She was patient. She checked in, as promised, annoyingly often. He laughed at one point, which made her laugh. And somewhere in it, he stopped thinking about small towns in Idaho, and stopped being afraid of what it meant, and simply let himself fall, knowing completely that she would catch him.

He never said the word.

Afterwards, she pulled the duvet over both of them and held him, his head on her chest, her hand moving slowly up and down his back.

He was quiet for a very long time.

“You okay?” Maya whispered.

“Yeah.” His voice was thick. “Yeah. I’m,” he stopped. “I thought I’d feel different. Like someone else.”

“And?”

“I feel more like me than I’ve felt in years,” Jordan said. “Like I don’t have to hide anything anymore.” He lifted his head to look at her. “Is that strange?”

“No,” said Maya. “That’s what it’s supposed to feel like. When you trust someone.”

He put his head back down.

“You’re still you,” she said softly, into his hair. “The guy who cries at dog videos. Who makes terrible puns. Who holds my hair. You’re still exactly you.”

He was crying a little. She let him.

At ten, she made tea and they watched dog adoption videos anyway, curled on the sofa under a blanket, because she said it was part of the plan.

A golden retriever puppy came on screen, falling over its own enormous paws.

“That’s me,” said Jordan.

“That’s definitely you,” Maya agreed.

The ferry ticket is on the fridge now, under a magnet shaped like a whale. The list on the back is longer. Maya keeps adding things.

At the bottom, in Jordan’s handwriting, there’s a new line he added himself, the next morning.

Not scared anymore.

The End.
